December 11

Another cool but beautiful day at the park.  The groups were large and Tim is away so I thought it would be challenging - but no the dogs were all exceptionally well behaved.

The morning group hit the park with a thud and was off exploring all the cool things left overnight.  Bella, Copper, Everest, Guinness, Marty, Nicky, Ryder (well maybe not Ryder), Ellie, Rover and Frank (who was lucky enough to get both walks today) took full advantage of the freedom.  It is amazing to me that 10 dogs can go in 20 different directions.  \

Wilbur has some behaviour problems that gramma (me) is trying to correct so he was on a leash but that did not stop him from wrestling with Marty and trying to get in on the chasing.  For a while I had Bella on the leash too so Wilbur and Bella were going at each other while tied to my waist and as I picked up poop.  I wish my mom had put me in gymnastics.

Guinness is so funny.  He has staked his claim to the Rubbermaid bin in the back seat of the truck.  He hops in the truck and right into the bin and there he sits.  It is actually pretty smart of  him because he is higher up so he can see out the windows and full of jackets, towels and soft stuff to get comfy on.

The afternoon group as usual required me to take Advil afterwards (just kiddin).  They are the noisiest bunch of dogs.  There is something about the combination that sets off a chorus of barks, howls, squeals and bays that could pierce an eardrum.  Most of the people at the dog park think that they are funny especially Crazy Copper.

Because they were really hyper when we landed at the park I took them to the far side if the park and let them sniff and explore and "take care of business" before we mainstreamed with the rest of the park goers.  They actually love it in this area (west of the parking lot) because not a lot of dogs go there so the snow is undisturbed in places and the grass is still growing through.  I have seen deer in there as well so the smells must be wonderful.

After the dogs had calmed a bit we headed out to the main area.  Once we hit the main path I did a head count and realized that Cheetos was MIA.  So we started to back track which is no easy feat as some of the dogs were on a scent and others were hanging out with new dogs.  I was thinking poor Cheetos if he had gotten confused and started backtracking it would be hard to catch up with him and keep the other dogs in sight.  By the time we had gotten the group turned around and heading back I saw a woman walking with a small beige dog in  her arms.  She was quite far away but I could tell it was Cheetos.  Apparently he had gotten confused, went in a completely opposite direction and then sat down to wait for help.  When the woman reached me Cheetos was shivering and looking so very forlorn.  The sadness in his squishy face was palpable but I could also see him telling me that being carried IS the way he SHOULD travel at the dog park.

On the way back to the truck we ran into Sheffield.  Sheffield is one of the cutest pugs in the park. He has a fawn body and a black face and he is in love with Cheets.  So to add insult to injury to offense he was molested by Sheffield.  This little dog just joined our pack and took ownership of Cheetos.  Cheetos is used to be a guy magnate.  Sheffield and his mom walked with us for the second half.

The morning group played ball with the Lets Get Walked gang until one of their dogs tore the ball in two.  Crazy Copper, Everest, Oakley and Wilbur were NOT happy about that but managed to find other things to entertain themselves.  Whistler is ether getting old or is mad at me for leaving her home two days in a row.  She kept wandering off and blending into her surroundings.  Even when she was close she pretended to not hear me calling her.  Just like a misbehaving pup I had to walk over to her and take her by the collar and escort her to the gate so we could leave.

Original Copper was getting a lot of attention from two boys in Jen`s group.  He did not seem to mind as it lit a fire under him and he tucked his tail and ran around in circles like a crazy dog.  It is not often that Original Copper act silly but when he does it is fun to watch.

The afternoon group was full of goofy dogs too.  After they managed to lose a couple balls we had free time.  Well, they had free time I was looking for the balls.  There is a burm beside the swamp and the tall dried out grass and small shrubs are still poking through the snow.  The goldens, Pina, Gabby and Sam were sliding down the hill on their sides and backs - scratching and enjoying the cold snow on their bodies.  They rolled through the shrubs and ended up at the bottom covered in snow.  Very cute!

Sierra did not roll down the hill she just walked to the bottom and rolled in the snow.  The rest of the dogs - Wilson, Sidney, Lulu, Taylor, Remy and Frank just enjoyed walking in the deep snow in an area that not too many people or dogs go into.  They played WWE with poor Remy taking the biggest hits from Lulu, Wilson and Sidney.  Good thing Remy is a big bouncy lab and can take all that is thrown at him even if it is a 100 pound dog!

Another great week is over.  Thanks for having such good dogs!

If you get lost at the dog park...

What a great day!  Both groups blew me away with how well behaved they were.

The morning group - Cash, Copper R., Frank, Joey, Rover, Whistler, Ryder, Bruin, Wilbur and Everest were so calm.  There were no squabbles, fights or disagreements from any of them.  Highly unusual as someone is always complaining about where they have to sit in the truck and who is beside them, who is touching them or looking at them.  You know, typical sibling stuff.

Frank loved it when I picked up a pile of soft snow and tossed it at him.  He jumped to try and catch it but missed most of it or it landed on his head.  He got so excited and animated and kept coming back for more.

Ryder had some wired behaviour today.  I caught him so jazzed up that he was running full speed in huge circles around the pack.  I think it may be because he saw his human "girl friends" and wanted to show off.  Either way it was pretty cute.  And the cuteness continued at home where he touched noses with the Rudolph on his porch.

The afternoon group welcomed LuLu.  She is Sierra's new one-year-old sister.  She is Catahula Leopard dog and really sweet.  She listens very well and melted into the pack like she had been with us forever.

LuLu is the type of dog that gets along with all the other dogs and that was no small feat as almost the entire pack was females today.  My girls all have strong personalities.  Gabby, Pina, Sam, Josie, Taylor and Olive all took turns wrestling and chasing her.  She could even handle Sidney who loves a good MMA inspired wrestling match.

My poor little emo Josie.  Some how she got separated from the pack for maybe five or six minutes.  I have to give her credit for her behaviour after the separation.  She, like all good hikers, knew to stay put until help came to her.  She played out this lesson so well that even when we all came around the corner and I was calling her she sat absolutely still and did not move a muscle until a nice man took hold of her leash and walked her to the pack.  Once reunited she was all wiggles and tail wags and they stuck to my leg like Velcro.

I love my funny, furry and oh, so sweet friends.

This week we say good bye to Max.  He will no longer be joining us on the walks.  Max was really coming out of his shell and being much more engaged and playful with the other dogs.  We will miss his funny little face.

Today was a very busy day for dogs and me!  When we arrived at the park there was a by-law officer there and of course that put me on edge.  The dogs were really good, stayed close and had fun and that is the main thing.

Most of the dogs and especially Guinness, Ellie and Ziggy loved flopping on their backs and wiggling around on the crusty snow.  It feels sooo good to scratch the back.

The afternoon group was nuts as usual.  Bo stole a ball and found a 4 foot stick and carried them both around the park for the entire walk.  He smacked Wilson's gramma and me a few times in the back of the legs and had some trouble getting himself through the gates.  Sam, Shea, Nina, Owen, Wilson and Olive really wanted to play ball but they were being too crazy and loud when I brought it out so they had to settle for sniffing, chasing each other and exploring the park.  We went down to the river today to get a change of scenery and the dogs bee-lined straight for the water.  I think Sam and Owen (both goldens) and Bo (lab) wanted to swim.  I did not think it would be a good idea.  Not because the water was too cold but because they would not dry quick enough.

At one point Wilson did something that Wilbur (20lb pug) did not like and Wilbur set to putting Wilson (about 100) in his place and Wilson listened.  Dogs do not equate size and power the same way we do.  Taylor, Josie, Cheetos and Frank were content to stay back and take in the park at a slower rate.

After a couple of crazy days last week - what with the weather and traffic and the cold we are all happy to be experiencing the milder weather.

The morning group consisted of Bruin, Bella, Everest, Guinness, Marty, Nicky, Ellie, Ryder,  Wilbur and Cash.
a
Ellie and Bella and Wilbur and Marty went right into BIG girl vs. little boy right away.  Sometimes I feel sorry for the little guys when Bella and Ellie play so rough with them.  But then again the little guys ask for it too.  After they paired off and then went at each other they then trained by taking on each other.  Bella and Ellie wrestling and sliding on the snow.  Wilbur and Marty practising their boxing moves on their hind legs.

Ryder aka "too cool to be in a pack" sauntered behind us and took extra time and attention to greet all the other sweater and bootie wearing dogs at the park as his self-appointed mission.

Nicky and Guinness were good boys and played with each other.  They really are each other's best friend.  The only time they are apart is when Nicky finds someone to scratch his back and then it is "Guinny who?"

The afternoon group which I affectionately call the Advil group was so loud again today.  I kept trying to move them away from the other people and dogs because they were so barky and rowdy.  They were very good and stayed together and listened to me but holy cow can they make noise.  We got into playing fetch until the noise and excitement rose to a intolerable level and then we had to stop and cool down.  Which most of the dogs took literally and they laid down in the snow.  A man at the park did compliment them on how well they stayed together.  That makes me proud!

Wilson found us from across the park.  He was with his gramma and because of the sun she could not see me she had only seen him go bounding off to find us.  You always know when Wilson is coming as he gets so excited and noisy he fit right into this group.

More good fun today at the park.  The dogs were all very well behaved.  We walked with Jen's group today (we could not yesterday because the boys were not playing nice with each other).  One of her dogs found a ball and Everest and Bruin had some fun with the boys in Jen's group (they were playing nice today).  But true to form they lost the ball about half way around the north end of the park.

Wilbur and Marty had a good time wrestling like they always do.  At one point Bella came charging at Wilbur and he hit the ground and rolled a couple times.  I am not sure if he rolled to protect himself from impact or if he rolled because she made impact.  Anyway it was funny to see him do this and then get up and shake his head and start right back into play.

The morning group does not normally see Taylor and Frank.  They are not used to the bigger group and held to the back of the pack with Ryder.  Ryder is no dummy he knows if he gets too close he will have to get involved and if he gets involved he may get dirty.  OH NO!

Guinness rode home from the park in a Rubbermaid bin in the back seat of the truck.

The afternoon group was rowdy when we hit the park.  There was CBC news crew there interviewing people about the name change for the park.  They took some footage of the dogs "playing".  The dogs were over the top loud, barky and demanding and to add to the chaos Wilson showed up at the gate howling to get in.  His gramma Lindsay was a few minutes behind him.  So he was jazzed up to see his buddies and jumped right into play.  So if you see your dog on the news tonight please know that they were only that crazy for the first 15 minutes or so and then they settled into fetch.

Remy, Rover, Owen, Nina, Olive and Shea were exhausted after playing fetch for over an hour.

Bo packed a log around the park stopping every few minutes to rest, and cool down on what is left of the snow.  He works so hard.

Josie played by herself and Cheetos huffed and puffed his way around the park absolutely miserable the he has to walk on grass.

YAY!! Fun Tim Was with us Today

The dogs were over the moon when they realized that Tim had come to play with them again!  They LOVE Tim. He is so much more fun that I am.  Well, at least more fun than I am when I am sick and have a damaged arm.

Tim and I took both groups out together today.  When we hit the park the dogs were excited, barky and jumpy - 16 dogs in 32 different directions!  After the walk (I mean run) they let me load them in the truck without a word of protest.

A lot of people stopped to watch us as the dogs were playing ball. Tim (being a 23 yr old guy) was able to throw the ball for the dogs for one hour and 45 minutes - almost nonstop.  It was quite a site to see 12 dogs chasing one ball.  Luckily, we came home with about the same number of balls that we left with.

Thanks to Max for finding an orange ball for the group to use.  Orange balls are the best because the dogs cannot break them down as fast as the tennis balls.

Little Wilbur played the roll of pack bouncer today.  Anytime a male dog came into the pack to play he would flex the muscles of his 21 pound body and chase the other dog out.  A couple of times Oakley backed him up - always good to have even bigger muscle behind you.

Frank fell in love with Tim and if you look at the pictures posted today you will see Frank trying to make out with Tim.  Ryder tried to get in on some of the attention and affection while driving and Frank was NOT having any part of that.

I am so proud and happy with the way things turned out today.  Thanks to all my furry friends for cooperating and to Tim for being such a big help.

Cold and Snowy but Fun

Well today was cold and windy and snowy at times but the dogs still enjoyed themselves.  (Except Cheetos of course.  He hates everything about the dog park and weather.)

The morning group hit the park with a bang and surprisingly on time.  I thought we were going to be much later as Everest decided to take himself on a 90-minute walk around the neighbourhood.  Scared the daylights out of me.  He returned bounding down the road, tongue hanging out the side of his mouth and grinning like an idiot.  I was not sure whether to hug him or spank him.  I chose to hug him.

Bella and Wilbur were wrestling and chasing each other as usual.  Marty did not get too involved which is strange because he is Wilbur's wingman.  I think he may have been a bit chilled and needed a sweater.  He toughed it out like a little trooper.

The afternoon group was very big and required Tim to help out.  Tim is our family friend who helped out last week as well.  The dogs and I got there early and Tim showed up a few minutes later.  When the dogs saw him they all b-lined to him and were begging to be petted and played with.  He is a good sport and grabbed the ball chucker and the tennis balls I had amassed just for this afternoon and they were off.  It was quite a site to see 10 dogs chasing one ball.  They were barking (Owen, Shea and Rover), howling (Crazy Copper) and scrambling to be the first one.  Oakley, Bruin, Remy, Nina and Olive were much quieter but still just as eager to get that ball.  The first one to the ball would strut around with it until either Tim or I pulled it out of someones slobbery jowls.

Grannie was a tough old bird today and weathered the weather like a little champion.  Cheetos - not so tough but we all love his pinched expressions and looks of disgust.

On a side note Owen smelled wonderful today.  He had been to the spa and looked and felt great too.

Another fun day for Fun for Dogs.  It was a busy day and a somewhat cold day but everyone had a good time.

All the dogs were still giddy and excited by the snow and the most unlikely combinations of dogs could be found frolicking together.  Bella, who usually chases Everest and tries to throw him off his ball fetching, was actually playing with him.  The two of them were out in the middle of the field pushing their noses through the snow and bumping into each other.  It was so cute and unexpected that both Jennifer and I stopped to watch the interaction.  Of course when they saw us looking at them they stopped.  Bella was also wrestling with Ellie.  Bella and Ellie act as each others wing-woman when they are coordinating an attack on either Wilbur or Marty or both.  Wilbur was not with the morning group so Marty did not have a wing-man but as it turns out  he did not need one.  The girls mostly left him alone and he was free to tease Ryder.  Ryder does not cotton to the young ones bothering him.  He already felt nerdy because I dressed him in booties and a jacket.  Secretly he likes wearing his duds but outwardly he has to deny it to the other dogs.

Original Copper and Oakley have settled into their truce and can be seen walking together in peace.  Peace is the most important thing and they are handling themselves very well.  Crazy Copper was a hyper hound again to day and bayed about every minute.  When he bays he uses his whole body and gets up on his hind legs and lets loose a howl that can be heard across the park.  Ziggy ignored his pack in favour of hanging out with Jennifer.  He LOVES Jennifer.

The afternoon group was happy to get to the park after many delays.  The icy side streets, traffic and Wilbur locking me out of the truck caused many slow downs in an already busy day. Luckily I pay lots of money to OnStar and the doors were unlocked quite quickly via satellite.

We met up with Wilson and his gramma and they walked with us.  The dogs wanted to play ball but there were several in the group that were too hyper for us to do that so we just walked and sniffed and played.  Bo found all sorts of things to pack around and in the end settled for an enormous chunk of wood he found down by the river.  It looked like a beaver had chewed it and I was surprised that he could actually carry it.  All the water dogs like Owen, Bo, Nina, Shea, Wilbur, Sam and Olive enjoyed standing in the river.  They were all encouraging me to throw a ball for them but I did not think that was a good idea as their coats would have taken forever to dry.

Grannie Annie was very strong today.  She looked cute in her little red jacket and was able to keep up with the gang for quite a while.  She got to rest when we were at the river and then she was ready to walk back to the truck (she only gets about half a walk because of her arthritis.)  Cheetos, as usual, was not shy in hiding his disgust at being at the park.

Snow Days

Well the white stuff has hit us and hit us hard.  Well at least me!  Sorry about yesterday.  After waiting for three hours for a tow truck and then until mid morning today to get my truck back from the dealer we finally got on the road.

Today was a crazy busy day.  Luckily we had Tim (a family friend) join us on the walk.  Tim was very helpful and kept the dogs playing while I carried on the ``business end`` of the walk.  I got the job of cleaning up after the dogs and making sure everyone was behaving appropriately.  Luckily everyone was so good.  The majority of the dogs were engrossed in playing fetch with Tim.  Gabby, Pina, Olive, Rover, Joey, Oakley, Crazy Copper, Cash and Wilbur loved running in the snow and chasing the ball.  When they finally lost both balls Tim was picking up snow in the chuck-it and throwing that for the dogs.  They were just as excited as if it was a ball.  Several groups of people stopped to watch them playing.

The non ball fetchers such as Josie, Max and J amused themselves by chasing each other a roaring around like crazy beasts.  Usually these three are very reserved at the park but something wild came out of them today and it was game on.  Taylor found a young male boxer to play with and they enjoyed boxing each other.  Ryder was too cool as usual to playing so he hung out at the back of the pack and disciplined all the dogs that were not behaving to his high standards (like the male boxer because he jumped on me).

Original Copper was strutting and sniffing and making new friends along the path.

Going home everyone was tired and cooperative and easy to load.  I wish we could have Tim with us everyday and so do the dogs!

We all felt the effects of the cold today!  Snow and rain.  YUCKY!

Meeko joined us today.  He has been off on long term disability for most of the summer and is feeling much better now.  He seemed to enjoy being at the park with his buddies and certainly loved connecting with all the people at the park.

Jen and her gang showed up just after us and we walked with them.  We thought it might be less windy in trees so that is were we headed.  The trees run mainly along the river and most of the dogs just tippy toed in to get a drink and then hightailed it out again except Crazy Copper the English Hound.  He wanted to stay in the river and play with branches or just run up and down the banks.  He had to be escorted out a couple times.  What is funny is that he was shivering the entire time he was in the water because he is so skinny and has a very light coat.  Crazy Copper!

The City has put up more fences in the main area of the park that extend almost the entire length of the south end of the park.  Urckle got confused and ended up on the wrong side of the fence and had to be brought back to group by a very nice lady who thought he was "lovely".  He is cute little guy.

The afternoon group was very well behaved.  The ball dogs. Pina and Gabby, found a ball and brought it back for the group to share.  Wilson found a ball too but he just wanted to tease the other dogs with it.  Which was kind of good as it kept everybody moving.  Even Max who is usually very serious was right into the play today.  He tried a couple times to get the ball but his little legs were not fast enough so he decided that he was going to try to entice Josie and Olive into chasing him.  They played along for a while and then went back to big girl stuff.  Sidney just lapped us around the park.

We met a park newby today.  He is a three month old coco lab and very cute.  We ran into him a couple times and he seemed to love the attention of the bigger dogs.  Everyone was very gentle with him.  His owners received the deluxe Fun for Dogs welcome with a pack snuggle and snot.  They were very pleased with the gesture.

For the first freezing cold day of the season all went extremely well.

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

Sorry it has been a while since I last wrote about the dogs.  Computer troubles.  New week - new stories!

The day started out cold and dreary but we were ahead of schedule which is VERY rare lately.  All the dogs were full of vim and vigor and ready to party when we landed.

Ellie was so excited to get going that when I let her out she practically knocked me over.  Now I always think of Ellie as a sweet older dog - maybe even docile but after the way she tore out to the truck and hopped in without any help I may have to think again.

At the park the dogs were well behaved and eager to find others to play with. Bella (aka Hells Bells) was the most active in finding new friends.  Unfortunately most of the dogs at the park this morning were not able to handle her ``in your face`` style of greeting.  So she mainly stuck with Ellie.  Ellie and Bella enjoy taking on the little guys Wilbur and Marty and at one point Wilbur and Marty had isolated Ellie from the pack and the two of them went after her.  She was not phased and laid down to make it easier for the two of them to ``attack`` her.  Wilbur is so cute he drops and rolls when the big girls are coming after him.  It is funny to see him and Marty play like real little boys.

Bruin, Nicky, Guinness and Ryder were, as always, the most gentlemanly dogs in the pack.  Copper and Everest were very happy to search out all the cool smells from the weekend.

The afternoon group was crazy rowdy as usual.  We managed to get to the river to play.   I thought that since it was cool that it would not be as crowded down there and thankfully I was correct.  The dogs were very vocal and eager to get in the water.  After about 30 minutes in the water my ears could not take the barking, howling and baying and all the dogs were shivering and it was time to get on dry land and warm up.  Cheetos, Annie, Frank and Taylor were smart enough to stay out of the water and wait for us on the steps until it was time to walk back.

Happy Monday

Well we started another week with lots of fun at Southland Park.  The weather was muggy and the temperature went from 9C when I left the house to 24C.

The morning group got to the park a little later than expected as we had to take OC - Original Copper - to see the vet as he had a sore on his head that he was scratching into a mighty hot spot.  The vet techs shaved and cleaned it up and sent him home with a cone.  He hates the cone and is VERY angry with me for leaving him with it on.

The sore on his head did not stop him from having fun at the park with Joey, Rover, Ryder, Whistler, Taylor, Wilbur and Everest.  Because it was Monday morning and the dogs were so mellow I spent some time cleaning up after the weekend users and ended up carrying quite a load of poop.  We went down to the river to cool off after making our way around the south end near the driving range.  Joey got through a hole in the fence and into the swamp so he HAD to go to the river to wash off the stagnant water.  At the river we played fetch for a while and visited with another dog walker and her gang and then it was time to head back to the truck for the ride home.  No fuss.  No fights.  Just good dogs to start the week.

The afternoon gang was small and happy and relatively easy considering they mostly ball nuts.  Wilson and his gramma, Lindsay, got to the park at the same time we did so they walked with us.  Max seemed to be the leader today and decided that we would all go to the river to start.  Gabby, Pina, Sam, Bruin and Everest were thrilled to play ball in the water while Max, Sidney and Frank explored the river bank, the grassy areas and other dogs.  When we were finished in the water we strolled around the park and then loaded up with no incidents and headed out.  No fuss. No fights. Just another pack of good dogs!

Welcome New Friend

Friday we welcomed another new friend to our pack.  Her name is Olive and she is a border collie/blue healer cross.  She is three years old, very smart and friendly,  She likes to swim, chase the bubbles from rocks thrown in the river and tease the other dogs into playing with her. She fit in very nicely with the established pack.

The morning group was energetic and very much into running and being at the river.  After we trooped around the north end of the park we  had a few minutes to run to the river for a quick drink.  Well it was supposed to be a quick drink.  The dogs were hot and thirsty and not at all interested in getting out of the water especially Whistler and Everest (my dogs are always the most stubborn).  New Copper loves the water too and will just swim for the sake of swimming I had to haul him out the water with a leash (on second thought maybe mine aren't always the most stubborn around water.)  Ryder is a very wise little guy.  He conserves energy, lays down in the shade and then doesn't need to venture into the river with the crazies to get a drink.  Several people asked me if I had lost him as he sat in the shade.  I had to tell them that he is smart and doesn't want to be trampled by the slobber-set.

Oakley and Old Copper have decided to enact a truce and not squabble over who is in charge of the pack because, really, I am in charge.  Smart boys!!

The afternoon group is a bunch of ball chasers and because if was so hot (27C) we headed straight for Coconut Beach which is at the far south end of the park.  There are parts of the river that are still quite deep and make for easier swimming.  Remy, Gabby, Pina and Sam were so excited they could hardly wait for me to get down to the water to throw the ball for them.  I have discovered that Max likes to chase the ball too but he hasn't quite figured out that he should bring it back.  So our game, while the retrievers are fetching in the water, is that I throw the ball for him and he chases it, bats it around a bit and then I go pick it up, wait for the big guys to get back in the water and then we do that again.  He loves it and it brings him out of his shell.  Now if I could only get him to walk on grass!!  Sidney, the party animal, ran all over the area looking for suitable wrestling partners.  The pickings were slim but he found a couple that would go a few rounds with him.  Emo Josie and Taylor used their cute little faces to get some attention for the other dogs owners practically sitting on their laps.

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Today was the first dubious weather day we have had in a long time.  Luckily we made it out of the park this afternoon before the rain started.  The wind was wicked and it was muggy.

The morning group was very good and true to form.  Marty was happy to have Wilbur along to help him with the big girls Bella aka Hell's Bells and Ellie (the most unassuming bad girl going).  The four of them raised a few eyebrows as the girls growled and pushed the little boys around.  The little boys fought back valiantly but ultimately size won out over pure determination and the boys went home exhausted and covered in dirt, grass and slobber.

Everest and Bruin were the only two interested in fetching and swimming so we did not stay at the river for very long.  Nicky insisted on keeping everyone in line while at the water and barked and ran up and down the bank ordering the dogs around.  Ryder did his usual hang back and watch thing that is until he saw his second favourite group (next to his family).  There are two women who walk a bichon/shi tzu and a Schnauzer almost everyday and Ryder just loves them.  He goes into full body wag and can hardly walk his rear end is wiggling so much.  They love him just as much and get so excited when they see him.

Copper and Guinness were the strong silent type and spent most of the walk exploring on their own but still very close to the group.

The afternoon crowd was extremely rowdy and LOUD!  Holy cow this group let the whole park know that they had arrived.  We tried to play ball but they were getting too crazy so I had to put the ball away and get everyone settled down.  Ziggy joined us this afternoon which was a treat for him and for Remy who enjoyed meeting him for the first time.  The two lab boys palled around together.  Bo was interested in gathering up as many objects as he could.  Bo always gets a lot of comments from the people at the park due to what he can get in his mouth.  Grannie Annie was happy to have her half walk and then get back in the truck for a sleep.  Those young-ins wear her out.  As soon as I took the balls away Owen tried to ingratiate himself with other packs in order to get some of their ball time.  Frank and Cheetos brought up the rear.

Yellow Dogs Yellow Lights

Another gorgeous day at the park.  Temperature up to 25 degrees.

Thursday morning started with a bunch of happy dogs eager to get to the park.  When we landed the dogs were hyped up and ready to roll.  Oakley and Copper L. led the way to Mucky Beach, which is by the bridge, with the rest of the dogs not far behind except for Ryder.  He always wants to be last so he doesn't get run over by the slobber set.  Ziggy was so happy to be out with the boys he went in the water up to his armpits and tried to get the ball once it was on the beach of course.  Ziggy the black lab does not like to swim.  He is missing out!  Everest the black lab was more than happy to get in the water and fetch whatever was thrown in.  Nicky and Guinness, well most Nicky, stood on the shore and ordered the other dogs around.  What else is an old Collie supposed to do?  Marty had his wing man Wilbur today and seemed better equipped to handled Bella and Ellie.

The afternoon group went to Coconut Beach at the far south end of Southland park.  I thought that we could stake a claim on the river.  We got the best spot - where the water is really deep.  This group of dogs is very vocal and eager to play so the noise level was almost deafening.  I was feeling a little conspicuous when a woman came over and eased my mind by telling me that it was a dog park and the noise was OK.  Alright then.  We just continued on.  Ball after ball was chucked in the water.  Remy (yellow dog), Owen and Shea were the most interested in fetching.  Rover just wanted the ball so he howled and did his best but with a muzzle was a frustrated most of the time.  Copper R. (yellow dog) just wanted to play with Remy so he would swim and follow Remy around.  Bo (yellow dog) did his usual marathon swim down the river after a couple of sticks.  People get concerned for him but I trust his smarts and his athleticism and sure enough about five minutes later he standing beside me grinning like a fool with two sticks in his mouth.  My non-swimmers enjoyed sniffing, frolicking and visiting with the people at the beach.

The dogs were having such a good time that it took forever to get them out of Coconut beach and on the trail back to the truck.  Consequently we hit rush hour traffic and (without exaggeration!) every yellow light on the way home.

Fun and safe driving is more important than getting home on time!!

Hump Day

I am so proud of the dogs.  They were so well mannered yesterday morning you should be proud too.

The group was much bigger than normal as I had a doctor's appointment and did not want anyone to miss their scheduled outing (Wednesday is the day that most of the "once a week walkers" come get out with their buddies) so I arranged for a helper to meet me at the park.  She unfortunately had to cancel and we were left alone.  YIKES! or so I thought.

Everyone was excited but managed to keep themselves under control.  We started by getting everyone focused on a common goal - a ball!  While I raced around trying to gather up all the poop and keep track of the balls the majority of the dogs got into the chase.  The little dogs with the exception of Wilbur were more content to hang together and sniff.  I think they just did not want to get run over by the slobber-set.

After the dogs had burned some excess energy and lost three balls we decided to walk.  Urkle and Max were having trouble staying focused on the group so they had to go on leash.  I felt kind of sorry for the two of them because every so often I would feel several more pounds on the leash and turned to find Wilbur and J humping them.  Those poor boys were captive and Wilbur and J being the cheeky little guys that they are took full advantage of the opportunity to tease them.

Copper and Oakley, our new boys, are getting used to being in a pack while still maintaining their independence.  Each of them takes turns running far ahead and then back for a check in.  As long as they stay in the general area I am happy to let them have their fun and exercise.

All in all a very happy and fun walk for all!

Welcome New Friends

How many more beautiful days do we have left?

Today the morning group welcomed our new friends - Oakley (a 9-yr old golden) and his brother Copper (a 6-yr old fox hound).  Both boys were extremely excited but a bit confused to be going out this morning but still eagerly jumped into the truck.  Both seemed up for anything.  The other dogs were pretty good to them in the back of the truck even though Copper has a booming howl only an ecstatic hound can produce.  Once we got to the park the two of them jumped out of truck like they had been shot from a cannon and then ping ponged around checking everything and everyone out.  Copper was so excited that he launched himself over the fence and into the swampy area.  Luckily he did not get into the stagnant water (GROSS!).  I had to climb the fence and then lift him back over and as soon as his feet landed he was off again like nothing had happened.  Both the boys love the ball and we spent about a half an hour draining them of excess energy.  Bruin, Ellie, Bella and Sierra got in on that fun too.  Bella does not actually fetch she just likes to chase those that chase balls.

Ellie is quite competitive with the ball and surprises me often at how fast and agile she is.  What I also noticed about her today is her bunny-soft coat.  It is even softer than Remy's.  Sorry Remy!

Marty was without his wing man Wilbur again today but is getting much better at handling the big girls.

The afternoon group was sooo crazy today I had to take the ball away from them.  When you bring several ball crazy dogs to the park and then run into ball crazy Wilson the noise can become deafening.  For all the ears at the park I had to put it away.  Remy, Owen and Shea were the most affected by this decision and the others were much more easy going about it.  We did a short 30 minute walk around the swampy area in order to let little Grannie Annie have her walk and sniff time.  After that she had to rest in the truck so that her back would not hurt.  Then we all took off for the river as the rest of the dogs were getting hot and thirsty.  Cheetos thought he should be treated as a senior dog and get to wait in the truck and was most pissy when I would not let him do that.  Even though he hates the dog park he does always try to keep up.  Josie and Taylor, who are both more people dogs and dog dogs were playing together today until they found some little boys who wanted to hang out with them.  Taylor helped one little guy dig a hole in the river bank and Josie provided her back and sides for scratching.  Bo found the biggest stick at the park and packed it around smacking me each time he passed.

Beautiful day for dogs!  Both groups went to Southland.  Seems that is the only park we go to lately.  Maybe when the dogs don't need to cool off in the river we can try some other parks.

The morning group was small and easy to manage.  Just a couple of rowdy boy moments when Wilbur, Rover and Joey got going on some unsuspecting dog.  They all love to chase and put a couple young dogs through their paces.  It was all in good fun and no one was hurt during these maneuvers.

Bruin and Whistler are starting to feel their ages with both of them stopping to rest throughout the walk.  Bruin, even though he is getting old, is still VERY handsome to the people at the park.  He was covered in dust from a good roll in the dirt and looking subjectively like a junk yard dog, and this one woman was absolutely gushing over his good looks and calm demeanor.  Bruin still has IT!

Ryder as usual was just sauntering behind the group waiting to run into cool little dogs (not uncool little dogs like Wilbur.)

After a long walk around the north end of the park we ended the walk at the river for a quick drink and cool down.

The morning group was an easy warm up for the afternoon group.  We hit the park with a bang!  Frank launched himself out of the truck and was ready and willing to take on any challengers.  We usually let him have his grand entrance to blow off steam and then the rest of us get out of the truck.

Gabby, Pina, Sam, Sidney and Sierra were so happy to get to the park.  Wilbur and Everest (the lucky dogs) got to go to the park for the second time and were just as excited as the rest of them to get out and get started.

Ball play iimmediately to keep the dogs occupied and out of trouble while I had the chore of picking up poop.  If I ever have troubles finding it I just have to call Wilbur over and he is more than happy to help his "gramma" find the pile.  I truly am soooo proud!!

Sierra is a very big girl - a Shepard/great Pyrenees cross and very docile.  Usually I have to walk her out to the truck.  Today she practically knocked me over running from the house.  Guess it had been a long weekend for her.

We ran into Wilson and his "gramma" and played with  them at the beach.

Since I discovered that Max likes to play ball he has been much happier and more engaged with the group.  Way to go Max!!

After the cool wind of yesterday it was sure hot today.

All the dogs in the morning group were very good.  No problems with anyone.  Bella and Ellie took it a bit easier on Marty today for which he is very grateful.  Jen's dog Olive thinks Marty is her boyfriend so he had to deal with her "love bites" today.  She is much smaller and easier for Marty to play with.

Everyone was hot so we spent a lot of time at the river. It is very shallow now and so the dogs aren't getting good swims but they are able to cool off.    Everest was about the only one who wanted to swim anyway.  Ziggy is a lab but doesn't swim so he just got wet and then ground himself into the dirt to give himself a nice coating.  Guinness ground himself into the dirt as well.  I wish I could figure out why they do that.  Ryder was a bit stand offish again today preferring to sit comfortably in the shade while the lower breeds splashed around and got dirty.  Old man Bruin just did his own thing.

The afternoon group was a bit more crazy (as always) but since there were two on the injured list every attempt was made to keep the dogs under some control.  Both Shea and Sammy have done something to their front paws so they could not cash balls and Rover and Owen just LOVE to chase balls while Nina, Taylor and Frank couldn't care less about chasing the balls.  Cheetos thinks that those who chase balls are beneath him.  Bo only cares about his sticks.  And apparently so does a woman we ran into.  Both Bo and I thought she was playing with him (which in hindsight is strange because she is not the most friendly person) but it turns out she was not actually playing.  She wanted the very stick that Bo had because it "is her dog's" and she needed that stick to throw for her dog AND she was "pressed for time".  Well try to getting a stick back from Bo is next to impossible.  Finally she gave up, picked up one of the other five or so sticks at the beach and left the area.

Note: As far as a dog is concerned everything at the dog park is for sharing!  I agree.

Felt More Like a Thursday...

Not sure why but today felt like a Thursday.  The wind was cool but the sun was shining and everyone was in a good mood.  The park is practically empty now that the kids are back in school and it will empty out some more when the weather cools even more.  Yay for me and the dogs!!  More room to play.

The morning group was very happy to be going to the park and made a fuss getting into the park.  We Jen's group had just unloaded so we walked with them.  We also met some potential new friends from McKenzie Towne who may be lucky enough to start walking with us next week.  They were a very friendly trio of collie/sheltie mutts that just wanted to play.

Bella and Ellie have become my new set of Evil Twins.  Evil Twins are not necessarily related dogs (or in my case adult children) who seem to form unholy connections in order to perpetrate evil on the world (or just have a hell of a good time together!) These two dogs, are on the outside, so different in temperament and personality but when they come together they form an unbreakable bond.  Today poor little five-pound Marty was all alone fending for himself against these two.  Usually Marty has his wing man Wilbur to provide back up and if necessary to take offensive action.  The poor little guy was dusty, had grass sticking out of his curly coat and was exhausted when I got him home.  Good thing he gets to rest for a day before his next walk.

Jen tagged Bella with a new nickname: Hell's Bells.  I think it suits her spicy personality.

We ventured down to the river to get a drink and several of the dogs were begging for a ball so I gave in.  After the first throw Everest brought the ball back to shore but did not bring it all the way back and as I was giving him heck and looking around for the ball I noticed that Bruin has it in between his front paws with his head hovering a couple inches above it and he was not going to draw any attention to the fact that he had the ball and was not going to share.

Ryder has become quite laid back and into doing his own thing at the park.  I think of him as a hipster and wonder what he would look like with an ironic t-shirt and large glasses.

The afternoon group was a little more challenging.  Grannie has re-joined our pack and we are happy to have her back.  She is quiet and little.  The rest of the pack with the exception of Cheetos and Taylor was large and very noisy.  Bo, Nina, Owen, Remy, Rover, Shea, Taylor and Wilbur all wanted to play fetch.  People were stopping to watch all eight dogs chase after one ball.  The clear winners in the fetching area were Remy and Shea.  They were the fastest and most competitive.  Even with all that retrieving power  they managed to lose three - count them - three balls!!  Two they lost in the grass and one floated down the river because Bo could not figure out how to get the ball and two pieces of drift wood in his mouth at the same time.  Wilbur ever the pug-ador tried to fetch a ball out of the water but could not get it in his little mouth while swimming and floated quite a ways down the river before giving up.  Luckily these two know when to say when and let the balls go.  I would hate for them to get carried super far down stream.

All the dogs should be tired tonight and that is what really matters.
After a late start to the day and over $800.00 in repairs to the truck we were off to Southland Park.  When we arrived the wind was howling and so were the dogs.  I thought for sure it would pour rain but we got lucky and it held off.

Bruin, Joey, Gabby, Pina, Sam, Sidney, Taylor and Josie all seemed to enjoy the cooler weather but it was Max who showed the most appreciation.  He HATES the hot weather so he was thrilled to be cool yesterday.  He was frisky and I think I caught him grinning a couple times.

Joey and Bruin made it their mission to steal balls from the retrievers as they brought them back to shore.  Neither of the big boys would give the balls up which caused my retriever girls, Gabby, Pina and Sammy to get a bit frustrated with them.  Luckily, I had several balls in my bag.  G and P are not happy when they are denied ball chasing time and Sammy protested VERY loudly when the ball is out of play.

Poor little emo Josie always seems to get caught in the crossfire of the ball chuck-it or the other dogs diving for the balls.  Yesterday she turned too soon and received a tennis ball in the head.  I actually thought she was going to cry.  I felt so bad!  She is getting quicker to recover from these types of incidents and did not hold it against me for too long.

Taylor (aka Tater-tot), Sidney and Ryder don't enjoy playing in the water and hung out on shore checking out the other dogs and the delicious smells around the park.

Hump Day

Another fun day for the dogs!  Not as sunny as Tuesday but they were soooo good I can't complain about some clouds.

All the dogs went out together in one big group.  We descended on Southland Park around noon and ran into Jennifer's group.  They hung with us for a while causing lots of people to stop and watch the interactions of that many dogs.  Most were amazed that they all listened and got along.

Urckle, J, Ryder, Frankie and Max prefer to not be mixed in with the big dogs so they stayed on the outside edges of the group - close enough so I could see them but not so close that they got stepped on. Wilbur (the sixth little guy) has no such fears and was on the big guys like a dirty shirt.  He even thought it was his responsibility to warn off interlopers.

Gabby, Pina, Everest and to some extent Rover and Sidney wanted to play ball.  We managed to get a game going for a short time until some questions from a dog owner regarding a dog's safety took our focus away for a few minutes.  Luckily, the dog in question was not lost and was with Jennifer's group and in no hurry to go home.  By the time we got back to our game the dogs had managed to lose our two balls.  So with no more balls to play with we took off for a walk around the park.  Lots of sniffing and greeting.

Since there were mainly little boy dogs in the pack today there was a lot of humping going on.  They did not seem to care who or when.  They only seemed to think it was a funny thing to do.

The MOST Wonderful Time of the Year

What a beautiful day for dogs.  The sun was out and the kids were back in school.  Does it get any better?  Temperature this afternoon was 20.  Perfect day!

The morning group was rowdy as they had some pent up energy from the long weekend.  It was a big group too:  Whistler, Bella, Copper, Everest, Guinness, Marty, Nicky, Ryder, Ellie and Rover made the journey to Southland park.  They hit the ground running and were captivated by all the smells and good greetings left over the weekend.

Whistler (who is on the injured list with a torn ACL - but no one would be able to tell) was howling as we crossed Blackfoot trail.  This got all the others jazzed up and they were all singing as we entered the parking lot.  I wonder what the other people think of this truck full of noise?

Marty did not have any little guys to play with so he thought it might be a good idea to tease and bark at Uncle Rover.  I had to put a quick end to that.  Rover has little patience for any dog other than Whistler. So Marty moved on to tempt Ryder into play.  Ryder does not do "play" and poor little Marty had to amuse himself by trying to outrun Ellie and Bella.  They enjoy ganging up on the little guys.  We get a lot of looks when the big girls try to take down the little guys.  Nicky and Guinness looked so tired today I wasn't sure if they even wanted to come out.  Usually they are all over me when I come to the door. Today they stayed where they were and I had coax them out the door.  Must have been a fun weekend at their house.

The afternoon group was just as big and crazier than the morning group.  Remy, Josie, Bo, Cheetos, Frank, Gabby, Pina, Taylor, Wilbur, Nina and Shea made up the afternoon gang.  Luckily, most of the dogs are ball dogs so it was easy to amuse them.  We met up with Wilson and his gramma, Lindsay, and they walked with us.  Bo, who has to have something in his mouth then entire walk, lost his grip on his bunch of sticks and they started to float down the river.  He was chasing those sticks for a long time and ended up quite a ways down the river.  We lost sight of him for a couple seconds and then we saw all the birds on a little island scatter and Bo run right up the centre of it with all his sticks in his mouth.  Everyone at the beach were quite impressed with his determination, brains and strength.  Wilbur, the pugador, is getting very good at fetching this summer.  He still has trouble putting the ball in his squishy little face while swimming but is giving it his best effort.  Poor little emo Josie was accidentally bumped by Wilson.  She was not hurt physically but her feelings sure were.  She has such an expressive face and the look of "poor little me" was so obvious.  I almost felt sorry for her.  Cheetos is another one with an expressive face and his was just *&^$ off at being made to come to the &^$# park again!

Sorry not so many blogs about the dogs lately.  My computer is acting up regularly and I get tired of waiting for it.

This morning Everest, Copper, Joey, Riley, Rover, Ryder Bruin, Vader and Wilbur all enjoyed getting to the park.  The snow was lightly falling and the temperature was mild and there was hardly anyone else there.  Very pleasant experience.  As usual the dogs were too good until they got a little naughty and ganged up on a golden.  In their defense the golden was unbalanced, they did stop as soon as I told them to and they all sat in a neat semi-circle in order to calm down before they were allowed to carry on.  How come the busybodies are never around to see that kind of behaviour?  Riley was not happy to pulled out of his cozy home but came around after a while and seemed to enjoy the walk.  Wilbur was equally not happy about being kept on a leash but he was caught standing under a big dog on the weekend waiting for droppings.  Too gross!!

The afternoon group consisted of: Sara, Taz, Auzzie, Frank, Taylor, Shea, Pina, Sam and Nina.  As usual we tried to play ball but the guys just weren't cooperating and they ended up taking turns hogging the ball and then teasing the others with it.  Eventually we decided to just walk.  We took to the far sides of the  park as this usually were the really good smells are and the dogs seem to love the longer grass and trees.  Sara who is only with us for three weeks was definitely the leader of the pack today.  Taz her younger but gigantic brother was having a hard time keeping up with her and several times became confused when he lost sight of her.  He just adores her.  I can see that she at times was actually trying to ditch him and have some "grown up" girl time.

A cold start to the day.  It started out at -26 with the wind chill and ended up at -2 in the sun!

The walks were a bit off due to the cold.  I am actually we held off until noon and so were the dogs.

Auzzie, Sara, Taz, Copper, Joey, Pina, Ryder, Sam and Kip were so goofy and ready to get going as soon as we got there.  We tried to play ball but as usual the dog that has no idea how to actually fetch picked up the ball and then lost it in the snow.  Auzzie and Pina were especially displeased with that move.  However, we were able to regroup and make our way to the north end of the park.  All the other people and dogs were in good moods (something we don't always see unfortunately) and the dogs enjoyed some good old fashioned sniffing.  Rover would be disappointed to find out the there was a snow removal truck on the bike path and he missed being able to chase it.  Several other dogs were having sooo much fun chasing the truck from the safety of the park.

The late afternoon group contained Wilbur, Everest, Whistler, Rover, Frank, Nina and Shea.  Nina and Shea had been at the kennel for a week and were thrilled to be back with the gang.  Wilbur was very mad at his gramma.  He has been eating poop and it has been making him sick so he was on a leash for the walk and quite cranky about it.  Poor Frank's little feet got so cold that he actually sat on his rear end and put his front paws up in the "sit pretty" position and then balanced on is rump and one hind leg so that three legs were off the ground.  When I saw that I realized he is not as tough as he thinks he is and took is cold self back to the truck to thaw.  He was very grateful!

Today was another glorious day at the park.  We walked with Jen's group in the morning and all the dogs in my group were exceptionally well behaved.

Bella was revved up for her love/hate relationship with Marty and since Wibur was not there he decided to play along.  Bella growls and tries to rough Marty up and he jumps at her face and tries to tackle her.  This is no small feat for Marty as he is only about 5 pounds.  Bella sounds like she will kill him and then looks at me and grins and wiggles!  Who says pit bulls are all evil?  Riley stuck close to the group.  He usually is a little loner when J is not with us.  The funniest thing was Guinness riding home in the Rubbermaid bin I keep in the back seat of the truck.  Last time he did that he toppled over when I took a corner too fast.

The afternoon group was very well behaved also.  We had Eli Miller join us for a walk.  He was nervous at first - getting reaquainted with the gang but quickly settled into the fun.  We ran into Trio and her mom and they joined us for the walk back to the truck.  I had to keep things quieter for this group as several of them are ball-crazy and can cause a ruccous.  They all seemed to enjoy just rooting around in the melting snow and forming mud puddles.

Monday, February 13, 2012

I learned something very important today - No phone call is worth sitting in your truck at the dog park while 10 anxious and potentially destructive dogs wait for their walk.  The afternoon group was going to start taking things apart if I did not hurry up and finish the call.

The afternoon guys were VERY hyper when they finally got out of the truck and it took quite a long time for them to calm down.  They were not bad just overly excited and had to let everyone know that they had finally arrived.  Luckily everyone at the park this afternoon was patient and understood dogs.  To be respectful of the other users we went for the farthest reaches of the park to investigate and to play.  Not too many dogs walk along the fence line heading north and we found a richness of aromas that would rival going to a new park.  By the time we were heading back to the truck the dogs were much calmer and quieter.

A challenging day with the dogs is infinitely better than a mediocre day with anyone else!

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

This weather is causing such confusion.  It was -15 when we started out this morning and 10 degrees when we got to the park this afternoon.

Riley and J were the focus of the group this morning.  Those two, when together they simply lose their minds.  They are so focused on play and exploring that the rest of the group ends up following them.  Luckily the other dogs have not figured this out yet and just enjoy being out.  Meeko came with us today.  He just loves being with his buddies and is always eager to meet new friends.  Going home it is a challenge to get him in the truck to leave.  Actually none of them were too eager to leave the park.

The afternoon group found a goose carcass at the river.  Wings, skeleton and that was about it.  So gross!  Nobody around had a large bag to pick it up so as I tried to get the dogs away from it two other women tried to get it in the river to float away.  What they ended up doing is just knocking it into the very shallow water were it sat ready for the dogs to pounce on again.  Buddy was especially intrigued by it and laid down in the water to investigate it, Auzzie was not going to waste any time on investigation and went straight to eating.  What is interesting is that Gabby, Pina and Everest weren't that intrigued.  I would have thought the retrieving instincts would have kicked in.  I guess they are all to well feed and "citified" for wild kill.  Sidney lapped us at mach speed as we walked around and played ball.  The gang managed to lose four balls (including two orange chuck it balls) today.

I love all my guys and I am happy to spend my days with them.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Poor Erckle.  All the boys liked him today.  Marty was constantly hitting him up and then Rusty who is not in our group was so interested in him that his owner had to put him on a leash and drag him away from Erckle.  All the while Erckle just takes in good humour.  Clover came with us today but she was not feeling well and the normally chatty little girl was so very quiet.  We all hope she feels better soon.  Guinness made a couple of attempts to act tough and when it backfired he came back to the group shame-faced.  He was especially pathetic when Wilbur took the leash that Guiny-pig was trailing and started to drag him around.  Nobody ever suspects the pug!

The afternoon group was a pack of misfits and it was  hard to get them all going in the same direction.  It was very windy and kinda chilly so Cheetos and Grannie Annie put up a fuss about walking.  Cheetos actually went and stood between some woman's legs and when she tried to walk he followed her.  He was looking pathetic as only a pug in the cold can look.  I found out today that he does the same thing with his mom.  And I found out today that Grannie Annie goes cross country skiing with her mom so the jig is up and I know her secret.  She can walk in the cooler temps without me having to carry her like a baby.  The funniest thing today was Taylor the 30 pound boxer playing with Sierra the 100+ pound Shepard/Pyrenees cross.  The differences physically were striking but Sierra and Taylor spent the majority of the walk chasing each other.  Good thing Sierra is a gentle giant.  Owen, Remy and Bo are like three peas in a pod that cannot get organized.  Remy and Bo are so big and goofy and they try to steal Bo's treasures.  For those of you that don't know Bo is a big collector of park treasures such as sticks, balls, mitts and anything else he shove in his mouth.

Monday, February 6, 2012

Another confusing day weather wise.  Snow in the morning and sunshine in the afternoon.  Cold still but the dogs still managed to have a swim in the afternoon.

In the morning Joey, Everest, Copper, Riley, Rover, Ryder, Whistler, Wilbur, Ziggy and Bruin hit the park with a bang.  Whistler, Everest, Ziggy and Wilbur had not had a run on Sunday so they were just a blur once paws were on the ground.  Several minutes of rounding up everyone and all the poop and we were off to the north end.  The dogs found a few others to socialize with but for the most part they stuck pretty close to me.  Rover, however, found a jogger on the bike path and proceeded to bark at her.  He likes it when the people on the path challenge him to a race.  She obviously did not speak his language and was miffed at him.  All I could do from the other side of the park was to wave her on and laugh.  Rover just LOVES to race people should just know that.

The afternoon group was relatively small: Auzzie, Gabby, Pina, Sam, Taylor, Wilbur, Ziggy and Everest.  We met up with Ace and Sylvia and played ball for quite a while.  Then hit the river for a drink and Sam, Gabby and Pina hit the water for a swim.  When they came out and shook the water off their hair froze in a gelled like manner.  Very pretty when the sunlight hit it.

Thursday, February 2, 2012

It was a lovely day all around for everyone.  All the dogs were exceptionally well behaved and even when they slid to the dark side I was able to bring them back without incident.

The morning group was easy.  We met up for a little bit with Penny Schiaroli and her mom and then with Jennifer's group.  Jen's morning group has some challenging behaviours and our group did not even react.  Everest is still made at me for putting a muzzle on him and he stood in protest in the middle of the field and refused to move even when Penny's mom gave him a nudge.  When he could no longer see me he made the move to find me.  Ryder made it clear he was not impressed to be with us.  He met his little buddies he sees every morning would have rather played with them.  Oh well Ryder!  Marty and Wilbur made it their mission to see how mad they could make Riley.  Those little boys are so cheeky but so very very cute.

In the afternoon, Bo found all the really big sticks and hunks of wood and the melty slimy puddles.  It was quite ridiculous to see me acting like an idiot so that they would all follow me away from the puddles that Bo had found.  Owen and Rover are very fond of yucky puddles and very hard to clean.

There is a vast difference to the way that I am greeted.  Cheetos actually looked away when he saw it was me coming in and then I got to Owen's house and he was waiting by the front door too excited to contain himself.  Owen doesn't like going in the truck but he wants to get to the park so he tolerates it.  Cheetos prefers the truck ride to actually walking.  Clover came in the afternoon today as she had a doctor's appointment in the morning and she, too, enjoys taking in the sites on the way to the park.  Bella and Rover are happy that the warm weather has brought out the bike riders.  They love to chase them from safely inside the park.  It is fun when there are teens riding on the path as they challenge the dogs and egg them on.  Sam and Whistler were happy to meet a new friend who had a big old golden (sorry Sam he thought you were old too) and he lavished the girls with attention.
Auzzie was a bit miffed as Wilbur and Mitch were not with us this afternoon but he managed to still have fun - just not as much.

Felt like spring to me!  And the dogs too.

Everyone was really well behaved and so polite.  Everest was mad because I made him wear a muzzle and sulked like an old man the entire walk.  (He will be even madder that I said this but he eats poop) and after the weekend the park is like an all you can eat buffet.  Ryder was thrilled to see his little buddies and their moms and practically jumped the fence to see them.  While the rest of them stormed the park - barely clearing the people standing at the gate.  Luckily all the people at the park this morning were in a good mood.  Joey kept Copper busy and just about went crazy when Copper rolled in the snow.  Joey really, really loves Copper.  Whistler and Bruin brought up the rear.

The afternoon group had two special guests - my nephew Timmy (all the golden girls love Timmy) and Trio (a little dog with three legs).  Trio will be with us for a few walks while her mom is on holidays but she is so sweet and strong and fits right in that we would love to have her all time in our group.  Everest, Whistler, Bailey and Wilbur got a second walk because Timmy was there to help out.  Tim kept the balls flying for almost an hour.  When all the tongues were hanging and lapping up the snow and puddle water the dogs were finally tired out and relaxed enough to just enjoy sniffing and roaming around.  (They also got a trip to the river for a quick drink in the middle of the ball playing.)  Gabby, Pina, Auzzie, Wilbur, Mitch, Buddy, and the rest were exhausted but so thrilled at the end of the walk.  Loading them was sooo easy.  They got a little dirtier than they have lately but I think it was worth it.

Deceivingly cold today.  The dogs were better able to bear the winds than me.

The morning group was soooo good.  Everest, Joey, Riley, Rover, Ryder, Bruin and Bailey really impressed me today.  They were calm and just enjoyed being out with the gang.  It was a nice way to start the end a busy week.

The afternoon group took a lot more work (as usual).  Since almost all the dogs were ball dogs we played for almost an hour.  We moved slightly from our secluded corner once the dogs had burned some of the beans out.  People stopped to watch Everest, Wilbur, Whistler (co-supervising), Auzzie, Gabby, Pina, Sam and Remy work to be the one to get the ball.  Usually it was either Gabby or Pina to get the ball first but everyone had a turn at bringing it back to me except Wilbur.  Wilbur is much better at stealing the ball after one of the big guys has brought it back and dropped it.  I was surprised when the alarm went off at one hour and the dogs were still interested in playing AND had not lost a half dozen balls.  At one hour we stopped playing and the dogs just trotted around, sniffed and socialized so they were nice and calm when we got back to the truck.

We're Back

What a beautiful day for dogs!  The dogs were all so well behaved even though they were a bit nutty when we first got to the park.

I thought that the morning group needed to burn off some steam so we tried to play ball.  And given that there were the following retrievers present:  Everest, Copper, Leo, Whistler, Kip, Bailey and an honorary retriever, Bruin it is no surprise that they managed to lose/destroy four balls in about four minutes.  So on we walked.  We met up with Gary and Sisco and they came along for the ride.  We then had a another late comer, in the form of Frankie, join us.  Apparently it was cleaning day at Frankie's and he doesn't like the cleaners and had to leave his home quickly.  He had more fun with us anyway.

The afternoon group was good as well and they took only slightly longer to lose three brand new balls.  Auzzie, Pina and Gabby were not impressed by this as they still wanted to play.  I guess balls are not in cards until we get back to swimming.  Our new friend Buddy was able to relax a bit more today and show his playful side.  He his still not sure of the whole pack adventure but seems to like to pal around with the little boys.  Taylor, who nearly perished last week in the cold, was in fine form this afternoon.  She was pretending that she was a mighty hunter and moved in slow steady motion towards other dogs until she pounced.  Very funny to watch!

Last week was gross!  I missed my furry friends very much.

Holy grossness!  What a wicked day!

The dogs and I tried to make the best of it best it was truly gross out there.  Everest, Copper, Joey, Rover, Bruin and Whistler made the "tough enough to try" group this morning.  Rover and Copper acted like it was any other day at the park while the rest of them started lifting paws.  There was no one at the park so I did not really care how they acted just so long as they got exercise.  So there was some extra barking but nothing too bad.

The afternoon group fared a little better but not much.  Wilbur could not even let his little paws touch the ground.  He was truly miserable about missing.  Gramma had to buy him some booties on the way home so he will be set to (maybe) try again.  Auzzie was dudded up big time.  Booties and a jacket but still the cold got to his skinny little self.  I, however, got a good laugh at the way he walks with his shoes on.

We welcomed Buddy this afternoon.  He is a three year old golden and new to pack walks.  He is a little shy around the more confident dogs but did enjoy doing figure eights with Auzzie.  Gabby and Pina came back from the country where they were for a couple of weeks.  They did not seem to mind the cold weather and were happy to get out and tear up the park. Sammy and Frank, though not quite as excited as G & P trailed along behind the group and made the best of the situation.

How much more lucky can we get with the weather?  The wind was a little nippy today but well worth it to get the sunshine.

Copper, Everest, Joey, Riley, Rover, Ryder, Whistler and Wilbur made up the clowns in the morning group.  Wilbur missed having a young little guy to hang out with so he decided to make a pest of himself and tease Ryder and Riley.  Ryder and Riley have no use for pups and yelled at him a couple of times to back off.  Wilbur thought they were hilarious.  Copper and Joey hung out again today.  Joey just loves Copper and Copper just loves the attention.  Rover who usually has to wear a muzzle as he is very noisy and loves to chase the other dogs (which for some reason scares people) has been so good since I broke his muzzle the other day.  He hasn't scared anyone!  I think he is finally growing up.  We had a huge surprise this morning when we pulled up and saw Penny Schiaroli and her mom Trudy.  They had moved to Kamloops last year and lucky for us decided to move back.  We hope to see lots and lots of Penny.

The afternoon group consisted of more clowns.  And primarily male clowns which meant there was quite a lot of unnecessary behaviours amongst the group members.  I guess Wilson and Sidney had to test out Remy's resolved to stay in the group as they were not present on Tuesday.  Remy could not have handled the situation any better.  We started out playing ball but, again, the group lost three balls in about 20 minutes and then that was over. I still cannot figure out how, two labs (Remy and Ev), Sammy (a golden retriever), Wilbur (a pug-ador), Wilson and Auzzie (ball fanatics) could lose that many balls in such a short time.  Oh well, they are much quieter when there are no balls involved.  Sidney had a race with a greyhound.  He lost of course but kept up for quite a while. He is super fast!  Little Taylor found several male boxers very handsome.  They thought she was cute too and they sparred a little until the rowdy boys wanted to get involved.  She felt like the proverbial "little sister".

Sorry no blog on Tuesday.  Everest and I did not get home from PALS until 9:00.

Yesterday we welcomed Remy to the group.  He will coming out with us on Tuesdays and Fridays.  He is 4 year old goofy yellow lab.  He accepted his initiation into the group with a great deal of class and was very playful with the little guys - Wilbur and Auzzie.

Today began with trepidation as the weathernetwork was reporting low temperatures and high wind chills.  By the time we got to the park and bundled up the wind had died down and sun was shining and we had a great time.  Ryder was the only sporting boots and jacket to be shivering at the end of the walk.  I think a lot of it was show.  J and Riley were up their usual tricks.  They have such a good time together.  The funniest thing they do is a bromance dance in the centre of the field.  I wish I could get video of it.  Meeko joined us today and boy was he happy to get out of the truck and stretch those long legs.  And Marty was thrilled that he got to hang with Wilbur.  The two of them are so mischievous.  They would grab onto the leashes and try to pull the other dogs around and they both work diligently to removed Marty's jacket.  Copper found a new little buddy in a pugle named Harley.  Harley is new to Jen's group and the two of them were like Mutt and Jeff.  Copper was very gentle with his new pal.  I wonder how Everest and Joey are going to take having a third Toadie?

The afternoon group got to play ball for some of the walk.  It seemed that they forgot that they were supposed to bring it back to me so I could chuck it again.  All the dogs worked against each other to see who could steal the ball and play keep away for the longest before being out smarted.  I would say that Wilbur and Shea were the starts of that game.  Mitch and Auzzie tried but could not keep the focus required.  Shea is very sneaky.  She tippy-toes around and then swoops in to snatch the ball as soon as it is dropped and then she sneaks away before the other dog had clued in.  This happened to Wilson several times.  Sidney was not interested in the ball - just the running.  Taylor trotted around the park like a little deer.

What I thought was going to a painful experience turned into a very fun day.

Another special day at the park.  Kinda warm.  Sunny.  Good dogs!

Copper, Everest, Joey, Riley, Wilbur, Whistler, Shea and Nina made up the morning group.  Since there weren't that many people and dogs this morning we got to play ball.  The other dogs wanted to join in but for some reason their "moms" didn't let them.  Oh well, we had fun.  Wilbur, Shea, Everest and Riley seemed to enjoy it the most.  Whistler was a giant pest as she would grab the ball the others brought back just to complicate matters.  She used to be the best and the fastest but now she relies on the younger dogs to do the heavy lifting.

In the afternoon there was Frank, Nina, Shea (it takes a lot to wear them out), Sam, Sidney, Taylor, Wilbur (he's got a good "gramma"), Wilson, Rover and Grannie Annie (who usually comes on Tuesdays).  We weren't able to play ball because this pack gets too nutty with the ball but we still had fun.  Sidney, Wilson, Rover and Wilbur found a choco lab that liked to be chased and then chased her literally all over the north end of the park.  They were having such a good time until Rover got carried away and dive-bombed the poor thing.  She wasn't hurt.  It is just the way Rover shows affection.  He kind of like a 12-yr old boy with girls.

Today was an absolutely wonderful.  The weather was unbelievably warm and the dogs were so good I could have weeped with joy.  They all played well together, no one whined about where he/she was sitting, any squabbles they had they managed to settle themselves in very short order.

The morning group consisted of Copper, Nina, Frank, Everest, Marty, Riley, Shea, Whistler and Ziggy.  There wasn't as many people and dogs at the park as there has been since Christmas break started so we were able to play ball.  It was great to see them playing even though Whistler and Ziggy kept trying to steal the ball even though they would not run to get it.  Shea, Everest and  Riley were the most interested.  Riley has to be commended for his awesome behaviour today.  He was so happy, playful and obedient.  Go Riley!!

The afternoon group was good too.  Cheetos, Frank (lucky boy with two walks today), Owen, Rover, Sam, Taylor, Wilbur, Bella and Casey all behaved in a very respectful manner.  Rover, Bella and Wilbur chased a few bike riders who dared to come down the bike trail.  The dogs can't get at them and they run forever so it works well to wear them out.  Cheetos was most disgusted that we chose to walk in the centre of the field.  (It is less icy there but unfortunately there is more poop.)  Casey wasn't too happy about it either but she is tougher than our prince.  Bella and Wilbur were play fighting and I actually think that Wilbur was confusing Bella with his strength and fiestiness.  Frank was very tired after two walks and passed out on the floor of the truck and I did not see or hear him until I got him home.  Taylor was tired too and fell asleep on Cheetos.  Cheetos was not impressed.

Here's hoping that tomorrow is just as pleasant.

Another beautiful day for dogs.  It was so warm this morning I did not even have to wear a jacket.  Tomorrow the wind is supposed to be wicked.  Lets hope the weather geeks are wrong.

Copper, Bruin, Bella, Everest, Marty, Whistler, Ryder and Erckle enjoyed mild temperatures and playing with friends at the park.  We went down to the river with Jen's group as two of her dogs rolled in poop as soon as they jumped out of the truck.  GROSS!  It seems that we cannot walk five feet with out walking into a pile of feces lately.  Ryder was on leash today for the first time since he was 16 weeks old.  He is almost five.  He has been eating seeds at the park and they have upset  his tummy so if anyone else is pukey for no other apparent reason this may be the cause.  Bella loves Marty (well any little boy dog really) and spent a good portion of the walk trying to coax him into playing with her.  Since she is so much bigger than him he tried but could not keep up.  When we were at the river Everest became mesmerized by the ducks and kept sneaking off to watch them and ponder how he was going to get them all in his mouth.  The ducks are pretty savvy and showed no sign of being intimidated by a large black lab.

The afternoon group was a little crazy so we spent most of the walk along the outer edges.  Which in a way was more fun as there is still soft snow there.  The dogs loved finding this treasure and running their snouts through it and getting all "zoomy".  Cheetos did not participate in the frivolity after all enjoying the dog park is something for the lower breeds.  Lucy and Teddy (the Christmas mastiffs) enjoyed playing with Dutch, Owen and Wilson.  Lucy has really come out of her shell - she was so painfully shy the first couple of walks.

All in all a good day for Fun for Dogs but it will be even better when everyone is back in school and back to work next week.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Here's to a wonderful, happy and full 2012!!

Since there are still a number of dogs on holidays this week there was only one walk.  For a change of pace and to avoid the crowds at Southland I took the dogs to Edworthy.  There were significantly less people and dogs therefore we could enjoy more space.

Joey latched onto Copper and followed him around like a puppy.  He was very excited to see his friends and was chatted it up with all the dogs.  Wilbur and Mitch palled up but when we came across a girl schnauzer Mitch's attentions to Wilbur waned.  Ryder was really into the schnauzer as well.  There is something about that breed (even when it makes up only half the dog) that makes them want to stick together.

Rover's recovered from surgery.  He had been off the walks since December 20 but you would never have known it.  He literally hit the ground running and did not stop until I dropped him at home.  We are all happy he is back and pain free.  Taylor was off with her mom for a week or so as well for holidays and was eager to get to the park and try to dominate Wilbur.  She stands over top of him as he fits quite comfortably between her legs and then nibbles on him.  Wilbur thinks that Taylor is his girlfriend.  Frank, Sam and Ev mainly kept to themselves and did their own thing (close to the group of course).  Whistler, the undisputed QUEEN of all dog parks EVER, was challenged by another old female from Amy's group who was quickly put in her place.
