Happy New Year

I am hoping I can keep up with all the fun we are having at the park.  It was such a beautiful day for dogs - scary icy - but still a beautiful day.

Copper Duck Dog, Bruin, Everest, Rover, Ryder, Whistler, Wilbur, Josie and R2 made the trip to Southland this morning.  We met up with Wilson and his gramma Lindsay and his "cousin" Lola.  Lola is a little Staffordshire terrier and very playful.

Lola and R2 are about the same age and they had a lot of fun chasing and wrestling.  It sounded like a vicious attack but both dogs would come out grinning and then go for it again.

Josie, Rover and R2 protected the park from joggers on the bike path, Ryder tagged along at the back of pack (its a good thing he wears a blue jacket or he would blend into the surroundings.)

The afternoon group hit the park with a big bang.  As it always seems they do.  Another big group: Pina, Gabby, Cheetos, Frank, Nina, Olive, Sam, Shea, Sidney and Everest (he got a second walk because he is trying to lose some weight.)

Pina and Gabby were back from visiting relatives in the country for three weeks and it hardly seemed like they were gone - they were right back into greeting and insisting on being petted by all.  Cheetos is into this as well but is a little more subtle and hangs way back from the pack, looks pathetic and then waits for someone to "rescue" him.

This seemed to be a gramma day because in the afternoon we ran in Kensi and her gramma and walked with them.  It is always nice to have someone to talk to.

All the dogs liked rubbing themselves in the crunchy snow and one extra special boy enjoyed rubbing is body in a fresh messy poop.  He will remain nameless.  He was also the most friendly and playful dog but people did not want him to play with their dogs once they took a good hard look at him.  GROSS!!

Been A Long Time....

It was a blustery but beautiful day.  The dogs seemed energized by the wind and were acting like nuts for both of the walks.

The morning group consisting of Everest, Joey, Rover, Ryder, Josie, Wilbur, Bruin and R2 were crazy happy to be out and about after being away from each other all weekend.  They played ball and managed to stay together for the entire walk.  Usually someone (who shall remain nameless but knows who she is) takes off on her own walk about.  All the dogs decided that the large mud puddle would be a good place to have a rest and cool down. The other people at the park jump around and yell and threaten their dogs when they go through the mud but I think that as long as they are having fun then let them be.  All of them were dried off from roaming through the grass before we left for home.

The afternoon group, as always, was a much rowdier.  Wilson and his gramma Lindsay came along for the walk.  Sam came back today after being off for almost six weeks with ACL surgery.  She did really well keeping up but was obviously tired by the end of the walk.  The brat pack of girls, Nina, Pina, Shea and Gabby did their best to convince me and everyone else with a chuck-it that they needed to chase a ball.  Owen and Sidney did their own thing.  I have to say that Owen went to the groomer's last week and looked very handsome this afternoon.  Cheetos was happy to walk with Lindsay.

Olive came back to the group after being away for about 9 months.  Good to have  you back Olly!

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

I love this time of year.  All the kids are going back to school and the parks are not as crowded.  The traffic is a nightmare but I will take that over screaming children any day.

It felt like the dogs were having their first day back to school as well.  Some very excited doggies at the  park.  Bella, Jake, Ellie, Copper "Duck Dog", Ryder, Marty, Bruin, Everest, Wilbur and Whistler were all over joyed to be together at the park.  Wilson and his gramma Lindsay joined us for the walk.

In typical Fun for Dogs fashion the dogs lost three balls even before we made it to the river for a swim.  They were miffed by the lack of action once they got to the river but still managed to steal other dogs balls and in the case of Whistler swim for the pure joy of it. Whistler has not received the memo letting her know that she is almost 13 years old and continues to act like a pup in the water.  People were getting concerned for her safety as she tried to keep up with the current and slowly floated down the river.  Once she realized that the pack was leaving her she allowed herself to be swept toward the shore and then she ran back to us through the shallow water.

Jake was too cute.  He kept creeping up on Marty and pouncing on him.  Usually Wilbur joins in too except around water and then Wilbur reverts to "lab" status and hangs with the big guys.  Bruin stole a ball and when the other walker asked him to drop it he did.  Funny....he never listens that good to me.  Silly old dog!!

The afternoon group was very patient with me as I was very behind schedule by the time we got to the park.  The whole gang was very well behaved and I was proud when they approached a timid dog and did not overwhelm it.  Cash, Cheetos, Frank, Owen, Rover, Aspen, Josie and R2 made me proud.  They found and lost a couple balls as only my group seems to be able to do.  R2 was adorable when he laid down in the water and he seemed to be sighing as the water rushed by him.  He just loves being wet and/or dirty.

Cheetos was not happy with having to associate with the lower forms and was grateful when a kindly young  man carried him to meet the rest of us up the path.

Looking forward to happy, warm but mostly long Indian summer!!

First Day Back

What a beautiful day for dog!

The morning group went to Southland.  The south end is open and a complete mess but the dogs have the field and access to the river for the remainder of the summer.

All the dogs were happy to see me and that warmed my heart.  Jenny, Jennifer and Acara took good care of them but they love their routine and their pack buddies.  Original Copper started back today after a month at home with his dad, Ryder's dad went back to work today too, Wilbur, Everest, Rover, Joey and Dakota rounded out my group of boys.  All boys!  Whistler's eye was injured yesterday when she was fighting with her brothers so she has to miss out on the adventures until the eye has a nice scab and the swelling goes down.

The dogs hit the ground running and were a bit unfocussed until we started playing fetch.  Everest was usually the first to the ball with Dakota, Rover and Joey close behind.  Wilbur tries so hard but his little legs cannot turn over fast enough to keep up with the big guys.  Wilbur's secret weapon is his size and sneaky nature.  When Everest brings the ball back and drops it at my feet Wilbur swoops in and snatches it and takes off.  He runs a few feet away so he has a good view of the others and then he crouches down and wags his little curly tail.  The other dogs have a hard time getting the ball from him and he loves this game.

The afternoon group was little more diverse.  We headed to Edworthy because Crazy Copper was joining us today.  Sidney, Gabby, Pina, Frank, Josie, R2, Wilbur and Everest rounded out the afternoon crew.  By the time we got to the park the temperature was in the mid-20s and the dogs slurped back a lot of water and played fetch before we took off for a walk.  R2 kept putting his paws in the bowl and spilling the water.

Today was R2's day to be cheeky.  He and Josie found a path down into this gross cavernous area of the park.  While down there they must have discovered a homeless camp or place to party because they were fascinated by whatever was down there and did not want to come up.  So we all ventured down the path and luckily half way down they came to their good doggie senses and came up to meet me.  Then we ran like heck back up the hill so that the rest of them did not catch a whiff of the goodies.

A very good day back with my buddies.

Super Swimming Fun Time

The morning started out a little scary.  The spitting rain, the dark skies the cold wind.   In other words a typical Calgary summer day.

The majority of the morning group is camped out at my house so we just had to pick up Joey,  Bruin, Rover and Aspen.  The rest of the crew is dirtying up my house:  Wilbur, Whistler, Everest, Shea, Nina, Copper Duck Dog and Vader.  After a not so quick stop at the vet`s office to discuss diarrhea we were off to the neighbourhood dog park.  The park is very small and kind of boring but with several balls and big bowl of water the dog powered through their work out.  Almost everyone, except Whistler and Joey were interested in the balls at some point but it was Everest, Wilbur,  Aspen and Shea that really dug in and tried to be the first to retrieve.  We managed to come home with as many balls as we arrived with.

The afternoon dogs got really lucky.  With some insider neighbourhood information from Sam`s `mom` we went to River Park for a swim in the Elbow this afternoon.  The road to the park and the beautiful home along it were severely hit by the floods so many people don't realize that the park is open again. We basically had the whole lower part of the park to ourselves.  We did meet a new friend named Murphy there.  He is a 16 month old yellow lab that does not know how to swim.  I tried to coax him in the water with the pack but he was content to lay down in the water at the shoreline.  Crazy Copper, Oakley, Gabby, Pina and Sam were so happy to be in the water and enjoyed the competition to be the first to bring the balls back from the water.  Josie, R2, Ryder and Frankie were happy to be investigating the smells along the banks and to interact with Murphy`s mom.  Remy had a tummy ache from breaking into a bag of Everest`s food so he was just sort of wandering around - not really into swimming but wanting to play too hard.

It was so cute when Murphy and R2 started chasing each other up onto the bank and threw the bushes.  Murphy could run much faster then R2 but R2 kept right up to him and almost caught him a couple of times.

All the dogs went home much quieter and calmer than when they were loaded in the truck.

What a horrible day to be outside.  One day before the first day of summer and I could have easily stayed at home and the dogs probably would not have cared.  Between the downpours and the mosquitoes that I thought could have carried big old Rover away with them it was a nasty day.  But we made the best of it and tried to have some fun.

On Tuesday we welcomed our newest little member to the group.  His name is Jake and he a minpin/terrier cross.  He has the most serious little face and funky curly hair.  He made fast friends with Marty and Wilbur and can stand up to the big girls: Bella and Ellie.  Jake is going to be very much appreciated and respected by his fellow little guys in the on going girls against the boys Tuesday and Thursday rumbles.

The afternoon group went to Edworthy park for change.  There was literally no on else in the park for the first 45 minutes we were there.  Josie and Cheetos wished they were not there and tried desperately to get back in the truck when the skies opened up.  The rest of the group: Oakley, Owen, Crazy Copper, Bo, Rover, Sam, Sidney and R2 could not have cared less about the rain and wind and bugs.  All they cared about was fetching the ball and finding puddles so that they could have a drink.

Crappy Weather = More Fun for Dogs

One good thing about the crappy weather is that the dogs have more fun and I actually have more fun watching them.  The rain keeps the solar powered dog walkers home and we have the entire park to ourselves.

The dogs got to spread out so to speak and behave like, well, animals.  Since very few other people ventured to the park I was able to let the dogs run and wrestle and be much louder than I usually would if the park was crowded.

Two big groups today - lots of people calling at the last minute and other dog walkers getting sick added more fun.  Bruin, Whistler, Wilbur, Everest, Copper Duck Dog, Joey, Ryder, Rover LuLu, Aspen and Kip enjoyed getting soggy in the morning.

Lulu, who is a leopard dog, likes to play rough and especially likes to play with Wilbur like he is prey.  She would take a running leap at him, toss him around and then was surprised when he fought back.  He is surprisingly fast and agile for a pug.  Aspen also took a couple running lunges at him too.  She is growing so fast that she can almost take him (if she gets him from behind of course). Bruin smelled the treats that Rover's dad gave me yesterday so he was my love bug for the walk.  Ryder was so cold and wet when he got back to the truck he was shivering.  Poor little dickens!

The afternoon group was just as excited to be able to be free at the park.  This group was even funnier as we had Kensi and Aspen (both six month old females) and R2 (about 8 or so months), Sidney (who believes he is still 7 or 8 months old) and Josie (who acted like she was a puppy today).  These five chased and wrestled each other for over an hour.  Sidney is much older and much bigger than the pups but he was so gentle in a rough and tumble kind of way that they all kept coming back for more.  He was like the uncle at the pool who picks all the kids up and throws them in the water.

Even Mr. Serious Frank was running and bouncing in the grass.  Sam was tired today so she was my special girl and stayed really close.  Gabby and Pina played the part of hostesses and if we did run into anyone they were right there with the greetings.

Cold and wet and definitely smelly but a good day.  Thanks to all my friends for behaving.
