What a crazy mixed up day! Most people and their dogs were still on holidays. The park was packed in the morning and again in the afternoon. Today we welcomed Lucy and Teddy to our group. They will be walking with us for the next week or so while their mom and dad are on holidays. With a combined weight of 270 pounds they are a whole lot of dog! Luckily for me they are the sweetest pair of mastiffs ever. Teddy was ready to party as soon as he got to the park. He had to say hello to everyone and their dog and their dog's brother and probably lapped us several times. Lucy was a little more shy and stuck close to the pack. All the other dogs in the group - Bruin, Everest, Whistler, Marty, Wilbur, Ryder and Vader (another newby to the park) were very welcoming. Marty and Wilbur were sooo happy to be together that they only had eyes for each other except when they decided, collectively, to see what Teddy was made of. Teddy just stood there and grinned at them. Ryder was happy to see his buddy Gary as Gary usually has treats for him.
Vader has been around for a number of years but I have never taken her to the park. She and I were both glad that we tried it as she was awesome and you could see she loved every minute of it.
The afternoon group was goony as usual. Gabby and Pina joined us today (they are usually M, W, F gals). They enjoyed meeting all the men in the park and trying to get these poor guys to play with them. People were laughing at Wilbur as he was stealing the balls from G & P and from Owen - kinda embarassing for three goldens to be bested by a 16-month old pug. Copper was with us this afternoon too and he, Everest and Ziggy palled around (once I got them all going in the same direction) and checked out all the gross smells they could find. Everest went MIA, under the fence and into no-mans-land where he was for several minutes. Ziggy stayed close as it was his second walk of the day and was getting tired and Copper was checking out all the females at the park before I could get him focussed on the group. It took us one hour to make it to the south end of Southland park from the parking lot so the dogs ended up getting extra time to play.
Sweet little Dutch (who really isn't little) just brought up the rear.

Three More Sleeps
The weather was beautiful and a bit confusing as the temperature kept going up and down. The dogs did not seem to mind the changes and happily plugged along.
Copper, Clover, Everest, Nicky, Guiny-pig, Marty, Riley, Ryder, Ziggy and Bruin enjoyed the festive atmosphere at the park. There are a lot more people and dogs this week. Everyone was really well behaved. We played ball with Acara's group. Everest decided that the couple walking behind us was more interesting and hung out with them. Luckily they did not mind a big, black lab hanging around.
The afternoon group walked with Wilson's family which totally thrilled Wilson as he had his people and his dog buddies. Wilson was extremely happy to see us and shot over to the group at the speed of light. Wilbur and Bella played together. Wilbur gave Bella a run for her money. I guess she thought she could get the best of a little pug but she was wrong. He is more feisty than average pug. Speaking of pugs Cheetos found another Sherpa in Wilson's mom. She really liked Cheetos and kept picking him up for hugs and cuddles and of course he sympathized with her needs and allowed the cuddling. Taylor tried her "domination" technique on another pug (not from out group) and was met with a much feistier little animal. Owen, the big golden goof, stole a squeaky toy and then proceeded to parade around in large circles squeaking and teasing every other dog in the park. He was so funny that the owner of the toy and had to just stand there and laugh.
Three more sleeps! Ahhh to sleep!

Five More Sleeps
Another beautiful day for dogs and people. Both groups went to Southland and were so very good that there isn't much to say.
The morning group consisted of Clover, Whistler, Everest, Guinness, Nicky, Ryder, Erckle, Bella, Rover and Bruin. Seems like a big group but they are all so mature and/or mellow that it was easy to handle. Bella and Marty tore up the park a bit with their chasing and barking at each but it was like a big sister/little brother interaction. Clover was happy to be out with her buddies and get some fresh air. Erckle is such a little old man sometimes and gets very persnickety when the dogs get too close to his rear end. And because he makes a bit of a fuss they think that is funny and keep nosing his butt. Poor Erckle! Bruin was missing his mom and dad as they have left him for Christmas and he has his nose out of joint but a little extra lovin', attention and exercise seemed to make him happier as he did not want to go home.
The afternoon group consisted of Auzzie, Annie, Cheetos, Dutch, Frank, Owen, Wilbur, Taylor and Bo. All the dogs were well behaved and civilized (for the most part). Wilbur, Auzzie and Owen made it their mission to try and steal balls from other dogs. It was kind of funny to see little Wilbur the pug stealing a ball from a much bigger dog and then scooting away with it barely inside his mouth. Owen and Auzzie were riding outrigger and aided his get away. Bo found some extremely large chunks of wood which I eventually had to take away and throw over the fence. He was trying to carry so much that his gums were bleeding. He is a crazy old guy when it comes to packing stuff around. Grannie Annie got a little frisky when a min-pin wanted to play with her. She actually playfully took off after him. Once she realized what she was doing she quickly stopped. (Old ladies cannot be frolicking with min-pin pups!)

Another wonderful day with the dogs. They are still enjoying the snow and I find that all of them at least once on the walk will be wiggling on his or her back.
Riley and J were like a bad comedy sketch today. They were tethered together because both like to run ahead and find new friends and it is easier for me if they both are going in the same general direction. And besides they love each other's company so it is not that bad. Today they kept getting caught on crusty old grass, fence posts, their legs, trees and virtually anything else that stuck up from the ground. Not only did they stop dead, they then tried to figure out how to unhook themselves by themselves which only created a scene where one or both had to be unleased and the leash untangled. After this happened several times we moved to wide open spaces.
Everest was a little bit cheeky and disobidient but sooo cute while he was doing it I could not get mad. I had given him a ball for a reward for walking away from an potential incident with an unneutred dog and instead of staying close after that he took off and was prancing around the field and throwing the ball for himself. Jen and I could not help laughing at him.
Wilson and Sid really enjoyed each other today. Both boys like to run hard and play hard and they did a lot of it today. At one point all the boys dogs were involved in the chase (except Frank as his legs are too short and he would have a very hard time keeping up). I have got to carry my camera more in the new year.
At home time the dogs split in as many directions as they possibly could. Pina, Gabby, Nina and Shea (not the girls) were the only ones that I did not have personally escort to the truck. Thanks girls!!

What a BEAUTIFUL day for dogs!! The sun, the fresh snow - too pretty. Both groups went to Southland and everyone enjoyed the crispy fresh day.
The morning group consisted of eight boys, Whistler and me. The girls were definitely outnumbered and boy (excuse the pun) it was noticeable. everyone was riled up and hit the ground running. Someone had to spend most of the walk tethered to Whistler so I could keep an eye on him. He was not happy and it added insult to injury that Wilbur was especially cheeky this morning and was teasing him mercilessly. After lots of warnings Wilbur eventually had to picked up until he calmed down and could behave. Joey and Copper chummed around. It seems that Joey, like Everest, enjoys being Copper's "special" friend. Everest doesn't mind that Joey has his side-kick job two days a week as it gives him more time to go "hunting" for treasures. Speaking of hunting Everest and Wilbur were standing on the river bank poised and ready to pounce on some unsuspecting mallard this afternoon. I have never seen a pug so fascinated by birds and act like a hunting dog.
Bruin loves the snow. His beard had icicles dangling but he did not want to get in the truck and go home.
The afternoon group had more girls but it turns out that they were just as wild about the snow and being at the park as the boys were in the morning. Nina, Pina, Gabby, Shea and Sam all enjoyed rolling in the snow greeting several men (they are all ridiculous flirts) and generally being alive. They loved having the fluffy soft snow thrown on them. Franky really loves this game and he gets so wild and crazy - jumping around and barking when I do it. They wanted to play ball but the snow is too deep and soft and they would just lose the balls. They manage to lose them even when there is no snow to lose them in.
The three musketeers (Auzzie, Wilbur and Mitch) were so exhausted from running in the deep snow that they all fell sound asleep in the truck.

Cold! Cold! Cold! Both groups went to Southland and with the exception of Grannie Annie and Cheeotos (the prince) no one balked at the cold. Owen even tried to swim (well actually he broke through a thin sheet of ice up to his knees.) When he got out of the water he rolled in the snow and his fur got all crunchy. BRRR
The Pinkney kids were gone as soon as we landed at the park. They led the group on a wild ride of fun and frivolity. Those three don't waste a minute on fussy. Marty had his paws full with Bella. She just loves the little boys and their crazy energy. It is a good thing that the two of them both enjoy teasing and chasing. Ryder decided to hang back from the crowd again today as he doesn't like to get his fancy duds messed up. Copper, Everest, Whistler and Ziggy did not even notice two deer walking behind the truck at the Mac's store in Cranston. To be fair neither did I. I thought the people in the store were just trying to trick me at first.
The afternoon was not as cold but it seemed like there were substantially more jackets to be put on. The unloading process was quite extensive. Everyone kept moving really fast. Not sure if it was the temperature or their own energy. Bruin and Riley did not want to come home and I had to resort to trickery to get them back in the truck and use some other people to lure them in for capture. Once captured they both easily relented and dragged their paws back to the truck. Frank and Taylor be-lined with no extra encouragement to the truck.
Looking forward to more happy days with my buddies!!

The morning group hit the park like an explosion and then kept on going. It took quite a while to get everyone going in one direction. And once we got going they squabbled like little kids. Apparently it was pick on Erckle day and he was not informed beforehand. Marty and Bruin kept on coming up behind him and either trying to hump him (in the case of Marty) or try to goose him with a very large snout (Bruin). Either way Erckle did not enjoy the attention and rightly so was very jumpy and overly cautious of any one around him. Res, Nicky and Guinness took full advantage of the being free and led the group around the park at full speed. Occasionally, Marty would chase Res who appreciated his attention. Copper was off like a shot making friends at a rapid pace and then bombing back to the group. Gathering everyone up for the ride home was challenging as they did not want to leave the snow and warm temperatures.
Ten crazy dogs and their crabby handler. Coincidence? I think not. The temperature changes are reeking havoc on my body and making my head hurt and I think that the daily/hourly/minute changes in the temperatures are affecting the dogs too. Auzzie, Bella and Wilbur were extremely rowdy today. I had to move the entire group to an isolated part of the park so that I could get them to calm down before being allowed to join "polite" society. In moving the group to the isolated part of the park we had to walk through a gully. Well, Cheetos does not DO gullies and I had to go back for him. In going back for Cheetos I inadvertently caused the entire group of nut-cases to follow me. And again we began the journey back to the far away spot. Everest decided he did not need to be pack member and kept wandering off in search of something. What, I am sure, we will never know. Bo knew what he wanted and as soon as he found something to pack around he picked it up and kept it with him until the end. What is interesting about Bo is that he will not leave his goodies while we are walking but when I start to load the dogs up he seems to loose his stuff. I think he is trying to blend in with the crowd and not draw attention to himself.
Any way you slice it a "bad" day at the park with my buddies is better than ANY day stuck anywhere else!!

It was another gorgeous sunny day for dogs! A bit brisk this morning but overall not bad. Both groups went to Southland.
The morning group welcomed Joey. He is Bella's (the pit bull) brother and he is going to be going out with the gang on Monday and Friday mornings. All the guys liked him and he liked all the guys but has very special feelings for Copper and if I am not mistaken their relationship will be the next big bromance with Fun for Dogs. I am so happy all the guys like Joey. The dogs really liked getting into the snow and rubbing their faces and rolling their bodies in it. Whistler was the only one who had trouble with the paws and being that she is such a tough old girl she powered through. Ryder was all decked out in a stunning shade of blue. Complete with jacket and matching booties. I had not trouble finding him in the park. Wilbur spent the night at gramma's again and got to enjoy two walks. It is so cute when he trudges through the snow that is up to his belly and then stuffs his face in to it. He looks like he has been frosted with icing sugar and the contrast with his glossy black too cute.
Today Clover came out with us in the afternoon and Bailey was at home with her mom. She along with Frank loved it when I tossed the soft snow at them. They got riled up and spun around yapping like the little dogs they are. Gabby, Pina, Shea, Nina, Sam and Auzzie along with Wilbur were loving the ball play. I think that the snow added an extra element of fun - kinda like playing in the water in the summer is more fun. We ran into Wilson (our new guy from Wed and Fri afternoons) and his mom and the gang helped Wilson find his new ball. They did not want to give it up and eventually a trade was negotiated with the ball we brought and they were on their way.

November 28 Adventures in Dog Land
Everest, Whistler, Copper, Riley, Rover and Ryder made up the morning group. We went to Southland and in their usual Monday morning fashion these dogs were really well behaved almost to the point of being boring. Ryder was a little cold as I did not factor in the wind chill and did not bring his jacket and booties but he toughed it out and gratefully took up his front seat spot after the walk. Riley wanted a bit more action than his fellow pack mates were offering so he set off a couple times to find some cooler friends and Copper followed his nose and led the pack for most of the walk.
The afternoon group had a couple of special guests - Grannie Annie (from Tues) and Casey (the cute little Schnauzer) joined the regulars. Annie was NOT happy to be out in the damp cold and even with a jacket the cold seemed to go through her. We had to move fast to keep her warm. Casey on the other hand had to be called back several times as we were not moving fast enough for that old girl. She greeted everyone in Schnauzer fashion and proceeded to order them around. Good thing she is only about 10 pounds and looks like a teddy bear. The rest of the usual Monday beasts (Gabby and Pina decked out in Christmas collars, Sam, Mitch, Wilbur, Auzzie, Nina and Shea) enjoyed playing fetch. An older Asian couple stopped to watch and were fascinated that the dogs all listened to me and that I knew all their names. The couple was full of questions and cute with their broken English and gigantic smiles.
Bailey did not join us this afternoon as her human mom started mat leave and wanted to walk her. It was weird not having Bailey. We will miss her.
I was on a tight schedule yesterday as I had a dental appointment as luck would have it the dogs sensed I was rushing them back to the truck after the timer went off. Dogs do not like to be rushed and will rebel (remember: never let them see you sweat!) Gabby found and young man and his dog playing ball and decided he was more fun than going home but acquiesced and came running after the man stopped playing with her. And Mitch! Mitch found the Colonel (or is it the Kernel?) and they were off. Two peas in a pod! The two amigos! Love at first sight! Both little guys forgot their names, their manners and respect for their handlers and Colonel's people and I stood on the side lines and watched the cutest thing we had seen all day. Finally they came close enough that we all dived on the dogs and grabbed our respective charges and ran back to the truck. The others were miffed that Mitch got extra time to play.

Both groups went to Southland today. The melting snow made for some mucky feet so remember to leave out towels for these kind of days.
Everyone was very well behaved except for one dog (who will remain anonymous). He/she refused to load up at the end of the walk and made everybody late (well only me) for lunch. Luckily Jennifer disarmed the dog and was able to leash it and we were off.
The afternoon group was a noisy bunch. Lots of barking competitions in the back of the truck. Bo collected some new goodies today which he packed around the park. When we went into the long grass to rummage around I knew where he was because I could hear him fussy with his things or barking for me to wait up. The dogs enjoyed being in the long grass so much that I was standing around enjoying them enjoy it when I realized that we were one short. Cheetos (the prince) does not walk on or in long grass and therefore had refused to follow the pack. Once we realized that he was not close by we trekked back to the path to find him standing there with a pinched look of semi-disgust on his face. He provided me with forgiveness when I picked him up and put him in the truck. Little Auzzie is becoming a big boy and standing up for me. A dog that normally does not come out with us attempted to jump on me and Auzzie lunged at the dog and t-boned her which caused her to have to abort the jump. Thanks Auzzie!
Some of the dogs were later than usual as there was a reporter at the park and she took some pictures or the dogs and wanted my reaction to the news that the City has approved 15 new dog parks. I thought this was great as it would ease some of the congestion at the bigger parks. If anyone sees a "Metro" in the next few days pick up a copy for me.

I am having trouble keeping up with the weather. Don't get me wrong I will suffer the Chinook headache to be able to get outside.
The morning group went to Southland. Clover was back with us today. She has been under the weather due to her cancer treatments but was in fine form today - barking and bossing all the other dogs around. Marty pestered poor Urkle again today. He has to learn to stand up to the 5 pound monster (just kiddin' Marty is still very much a pup in his play and this sometimes bothers the older dogs.) The Pinkney kids stuck close together for most of the walk with Rez leading the boys around the park in a rousing game of chase. We see a very young yellow lab quite often but have not seen him for a couple weeks. Guinness was shocked to discover that the pup was bigger than him how. The look on his little face was so cute. Bruin was told he was handsome. He knows this already but it is still nice to hear. We all had the most fun trekking through the tall grass. There are some paths and some places were wild animals have slept and the dogs love it especially the little guys because the grass is over their heads. Ryder and I played "I'm going to get you Schnoodle" which made him tear around like a little maniac. He loves that game. We invented it when he stayed one time.
The afternoon group was big and bit unwieldy at times. CPC Cheetos did not enjoy the wind and felt that he would just literally blow away if he was not protected from the elements. Grannie Annie felt the same way and they both gratefully accepted the offer to return to the truck a few minutes earlier. Owen was sooo pretty today. I could not help noticing that he had the most beautiful sparkly barrettes in his hair. What a good boy Owen is to sit still and be all dolled up by his little girl. Dutch is usually the most quiet and sweet dog in the truck until today. Wilson joined us as his "mom" was not feeling well and he was excited and a bit nervous as he doesn't get out with us much so he was whining and barking. Well Dutch had enough of the racket and growled at him. I say "you go girl!" because I wasn't having much luck keeping him quiet. At the park he was a perfect dog. Bo is the happiest dog I have walked in a long time. He just has such a good time picking up chunks of wood and packing them around. When he stops to take a break he is out of breath, panting and grinning ear to ear.

So cold! So very very cold.
The big guys (Rover, Whistler, Everest, Leo, Kip, Bruin and Copper) and I braved the frigid temps on Friday and managed to get about 45 minutes of exercise in before the dogs started lifting their feet. I was really surprised that Everest was the first to call "uncle". The dogs and I moved at a good pace the entire walk. We ran into Nina and Shea with their mom so it made the walk much more enjoyable. Nina and Shea had a ball which kept Rover, Kip and Leo interested and moving for the entire walk. At the end of the walk Bruin still did not want to go home and stood very still in the middle of the field. I guess he thought if he did not move I might not see him. As if I would not see an 80 pound black dog in the middle of a snowy field. Copper found a little boxer from another group and was quite frisky with him. They were having a blast wrestling and like Bruin totally trying to ignore that it was time to go.
The afternoon group was full of big guys again and one little guy - Wilbur. He had on his jacket and was ready to rock when we got to the park. At Edworthy it is easy to hide in the forested areas which cuts down the wind and makes the walk somewhat pleasant in these frigid temps. There weren't a lot of people at the park which meant that Gabby and Pina had to find other things to do besides suck up to other dog owners and get petted. They managed to find a ball and keep the others busy by teasing them. Wilbur, Bailey and Sidney were wild animals in the wooded areas and were deeking in and out of the branches and low bushes. Poor little Wilbur ended up taking a branch in the eye and had to go to the vet after the walk. Gramma took care of him so he is going to be OK in about a week. Sidney is very slim and has a short coat so he has to move extra fast to keep his temperature up. He usually moves at mach 1 and yesterday he had to stay at mach 2 to generate enough heat. He was so excited to find anyone who would chase him or rough house with. Everest took him on a couple of times even though Ev is way out of Sid's weight category. Frank and Sammy were very demure and calm and did not seem bothered by the cold even though they were not moving like the crazy animals they are.

Holy cow! Winter has hit the last couple of days. The dogs don't seem fazed by it yet but get the sweaters ready.
The morning group was a bit unwieldy as I had to pick up some of Jen's dogs (she wasn't feeling well). All the dogs got along really well and people were actually surprised at how well they behaved. Rez, Nicky and Guiness (collectively known as the "Pinkney kids") stuck to themselves. Rez is just visiting and is so happy to get out and run like crazy. She could be found leading the pack. Marty was ecstatic that Wilbur was with the morning group. They love each other and have such a good time wrestling and running and rolling over each other. Ziggy, Copper and Everest made up their own lab trio and proceeded to try and take down and/or chase other dogs. Good times! Even Riley stuck close to the pack (he usually likes to strike out on his own.) On the way back to the truck we detoured through the tall grass and that seemed to excited the little guys. Ryder came to life and was tearing around like a maniac. It was cute to see him act like that as he usually is so introverted.
The afternoon group went to Southland. We had Bo along for the second time this week. Welcome Bo. He is new to our group and comes to us from Acara's group. He is a seven year old yellow lab and goofy and sweet as they come. He likes to pick up very large hunks of wood, balls or anything else he can wrap his maw around and carry it around for the entire walk. Every once in a while he has to stop, drop his goodies and take a breath. I was surprised that he was carrying a piece of wood that was about 20 pounds. He is strong.
I took the guys down to the river for a drink to get the walk started. Everyone had a drink except for his highness Cheetos. Cheetos does not "ingest" river water I was told. Auzzie is too tough to let surgery slow him down and he and Wilbur kept up the pace for the entire 75 minutes. Owen and Sammy had a barking contest. I think that Owen is louder but Sammy has stamina.
All in all a very good day.

Brrrr! What a cold morning. The snow seemed to stop the wind but I am not sure which is worse in the long run.
The morning group was a small quiet gang consisting of Everest, Copper, Riley, Rover, Ryder, Whistler and Bruin. All mature and happy souls once they got out of the truck. There was a gaggle of people and dogs right by the gate and I did not want to let the dogs en mass and scare the heck out of the other dogs and people. Never a good start on a Monday morning. Poor little Ryder was so cold even with a sweater on. I felt bad for him and tried to keep him moving quickly to keep warm. Riley did not seem to be bothered by the cold wind and found lots of other little dogs to visit and romp with. Copper was too cute when he spied a woman with furry balls hanging from her boots. He kept trying to catch them. She did not seem to know what he was doing but once she realized she thought it was cute too. (Don't tell his "dad" but he was very cat-like in his actions.)
Whistler and Rover wrestled and chased each other which is rare as Whistler usually does not engage with her subjects. It is nice to see she still has some pup left in her.
The afternoon group was bigger and rowdier as always. Auzzie did not make it today as he is recovering from his surgery and doing very well I am told. He should be back tomorrow for the fun and frenzy. We walked with Jen's group until one of her senior dogs wandered off and she had to go find the old girl. Bailey was thinking she was a youngster too. She was getting in on the wrestling with the young boys (from Jen's group) and was going to take the winner. Nina and Shea were up to their usual tricks - staying close but going just far enough to explore some really good stinky stuff. Mitch and his girlfriend Olivia (also from Jen's group) played together much to Wilbur's dismay. He wants to be the centre of Auzzie and Mitch's attention when they are together.
Please leave jackets, towels and crates within easy reach of the door as I usually don't have enough time to take my boots off at each house. Thanks!

It was cold today but I am not complaining... yet.
The morning group (Everest, Copper, Riley, Rover, Ryder and Whistler) went to Southland. Being that the weekend warriors are not able or willing to clean up after their dogs a good deal of time was spent picking up "stuff" so that it did not: a) get eaten b) stepped in by me and c) rolled in by our gang. The dogs were wild for all the smells and it took quite a while to get everyone going in the same direction. At one point I thought I had them all focused and moving forward and then as we were going to go through the gate the "heads" did not add up. Whistler was not present and accounted for. This is not like her to not come when into view when called. She does not always come to me but she always pokes her head up and lets me know where she is. Being a concerned doggie-mama I gathered the boys up and we went to look for her. When I found her she had her head in the grass eating something that was still steaming. I am thinking and hoping it was her own breakfast and not someone else's. And you thought my job was all fun and games!!
There are a couple of older female labs that are in love with Copper. It was so sweet and romantic to see the females run across the field and Copper run out to meet them. The oldest of the girls did a wiggly jump for him. He has quite the effect on the ladies.
The afternoon group was big and bouncy and slightly crazy so ball play was out of the question. That and the fact that I could not find any balls in the truck. We had Sierra join us again today. We love Sierra. She is big and gentle and she LOVES to play with the little boys which is so funny to watch as Sierra is about five times bigger than they are. She kept Wilbur, Mitch and Auzzie busy and out of trouble. Nina, Shea, Gabby and Pina found a boy to adore. A human boy. And they stuck to him for an embarrassing amount of time. He seemed to like the attention. If you ever want to meet men take those four to the park and let them find the friendly, easy going guys for you. Bailey was more into wrestling with the dog-boys from Jen's group then ogling strange men. While Sammy was just a sweetheart and wanted to hang with me.
As always I love my job and my hairy slightly crazy group of forever BFFs.

Another beautiful day Fall day for dogs. How much more of this can we stand?
The morning group was quite big for a Thursday with the late addition of Sierra. She is always welcome to come along as she is so friendly and well-behaved. For those that don't know her she is a Great Pyrenees/German Shepherd cross and about 100 pounds. He head is the size of Marty's entire body but they were playing together today. The size difference made it funny to watch and Marty gave her a run for her money. Copper was the leader today. He must have gotten a good sleep as he had tons of energy and was leading the pack around the park. We almost had the entire north end to ourselves which means we can spread out and go a bit wilder.
As for the afternoon group all I can say is THANKS guys for being so good. Not one problem, squabble or hissy fit was had. Just good happy dogs.
I will be walking on Friday, November 11 if you want to get out and about without your dog just let me know.

Thank you to everyone who helped me out today! I had to have my truck towed in for servicing first thing this morning and consequently ended up behind schedule by 2 - 3 hours. Your patience is most appreciated.
Both groups got to go to Southland today. The first group was raring to go and hit the ground running. Auzzie, Rover, Bruin, Frank, Guiness, Marty, Nicky, Whistler and Wilbur were very excited to get to the park (especially Wilbur and Whistler who had been sitting in the back of the truck through most of the towing and repairs.) Marty was really happy to have Wilbur and Auzzie to play with. Usually he doesn't have a little buddy to hang out with in the morning. Bruin, Whistler and Guinny were really itchy today as they seemed to be wiggling on their backs in the dry crunchy grass an awful lot.
The second group was a little bigger as I did not have time to get Everest and Wilbur home. This made the walk exciting to say the least. Taylor and Bella have not played together before but took to each other like old buddies. They were chasing and growling at each other. They enjoyed the rough play but might have worried some of the others at the park with the amount of noise they made. Big Owen made a point to steal all the balls he could find from other dogs and manage to loose the one I gave him. At one point he stole a ball from a dog and the woman needed it back to get her dog's attention to leave the park. I had to sneak up on Owen and grab him around his tummy as he lay mauling the ball. A couple minutes later he had stolen the ball again from the same dog and lay in the grass mauling it. This time he was not so trusting and when I went in to grab him by the tummy again he was on to me and got up quickly and I ended up being able to only grab his tail. He was not thrilled with me but conceded defeat and gave up the ball.
Grannie Annie was so cute and cuddly while we were driving. She kept putting her little head on my arm and staring up at me. She had the tiniest little blond face.
Copper, Dutch and Clover mainly kept to themselves and enjoyed just being outside on a beautiful day.

Happy Halloween
Who know that when the snow started this morning that the day would end in sunshine and sweatshirts and not shovels and boots.
Lucky for us the snow scared away a lot of people from the park this morning. Everest, Copper, Riley, Rover, Ryder, Whistler and Bruin got to enjoy the entire north end of the park by themselves. Riley was super cute today. He was running around and acting all chipper and cute. He was chasing Everest - something I have never seen before and teasing Ryder - something I see almost everyday. Copper enjoyed meeting Christy. Christy is an old fat dog that LOVES our boy Copper and likes to show it. He was very patient with her and enjoyed the exuberant attention. By the time we got back to the truck all the dogs were quite wet and muddy and the little guys spread this mess all over the inside of the truck.
The afternoon group went to Edworthy and enjoyed the sunshine. We tried to play ball but again they lost all the balls that Bella's dad had given us last week within about 10 minutes. So we just walked and explored the park. We met up with Jen's group and all the dogs enjoyed having someone to play with. Mitch let the trio of Wilbur, Auzzie and Mitch to play with Olivia from Jen's group. Those two have a special love affair going on and play so well together. Sierra came out with us today and we loved having her. She is a gentle giant and gets along with everyone especially the little boys. The only one who had a rough time today was Frank. He received some unwanted attention in the form of a love nibble and slobber from a 110 pound mastiff. Fortunately, the only thing hurt was his ego.

Friday's Adventures
Friday was a slow and easy day for both the dogs and me. In the morning we only had Copper, Everest, Riley, Rover, Ryder, Whistler, Bruin and Frank. This may seem like a lot of dogs to some but for me they are all so good and so mature that it was easy. Even Riley with his independent spirit stayed close to the gang. We walked with Tammy and her mini-pack of dogs which gave an opportunity for the dog park newbies to have a pleasant experience. After a trip up and around the north end of the park we made a speedy trip to the river for a drink and then it was home time.
The afternoon could not have been easier. Auzzie, Wilbur, Frank, Bailey, Sam and Everest made the group. There were a lot of dogs and their people at the park so we had to forgo the usual fast and furious ball play and I just kicked the ball short distances for them to retrieve. We walked through the forest and ran into Jen and her pack and Cat and her pack. Auzzie was very happy as Cat had a long leggy Vischla puppy that made the perfect companion for him. Too bad they were on their way out of the park and the pups could only play for a short time. Bailey's leg is healing up after her injury (with her gramma) last week but she is still limping slightly and I practically had to sit on her to keep her from frolicking too much. Those labs just do not know when to stop. Getting everyone in the truck was a challenge as they were so happy and being so good that I could barely bring myself to make them leave.

I love the mild weather and according to Taylor's dad it won't snow for another three weeks as he is putting his snow tires on this weekend! YAY for us. Because of the nice weather the parks have been extra busy for this time of year we seem to be getting distracted with more socializing and not as much vigorous exercise.
The morning group, Copper, Clover, Everest, Guinny-pig, Nicky, Marty, Riley, Ryder and Ziggy were very good dogs. Marty was a little cheeky and had a great time teasing the older boys Ryder and Riley but I secretly think that they love the attention. Riley found something disgusting that held his attention for quite a long time. Whatever it was he could not roll in it or carry it so that was good. When Ziggy (a lab) saw Jen he ran straight for her and rolled on to his back for a tummy rub then proceeded to ignore me. He loves Jen. This is kinda funny as Jen has a yellow lab in her afternoon pack that loves me more than her and will b-line to me and stay by my side until he is leashed and dragged away. Clover was happy to be out with the gang. She seems to love the car ride the most as she gets to sit in the cab. She is grinning the whole time.
The afternoon group went to Southland as well. This pack was rowdier (as usual) and I am not sure why the afternoon guys are so much more "energetic". Auzzie started the walk by jumping out of the truck with Wilbur close behind and landing on Owen. He got them back later by being faster and much much larger which totally befuddled the little guys. Bella loves greeting the new dogs but is still a bit rusty on how to do it without scaring the dog's owner. She tends to stalk and then pounce and then stand there and wag her tail like "I'm here. How do you like me so far?" What is most interesting about the stalking behaviour is that I think Wilbur is copying her. He actually stopped dead, spied Auzzie in the tall grass chowing on a ball, lifted one back paw and one front paw, uncurled his tail and then began to ever so slowly walk toward Auzzie. There is nothing funnier than seeing a pug stalk another dog. It is almost as funny as when Taylor the goofy little boxer does it.
Before Auzzie became Wilbur's prey he had found a disgusting ball that he was throwing around for himself. (When Rover is in the pack I don't bring balls as they get him too excited and he has a melt down.) So finding a ball was a coup for the little guy and he was having a grand old time.
Poor little Cheetos - you know the Crown Prince Cheetos. He had no one to carry him today and he was miffed. On Tuesday we had a guy join us to see if his dog would fit in our pack and he picked Cheetos up and carried him as he was walking too slow. Cheets expects that kind of attention and when he doesn't get it he gets huffy. And then to add insult to injury Taylor tried her stalking routine on him. Well you can imagine the indignity of it all.
And in and amongst all the loonies there was Sam the Ham just happy to be alive and at the park.
The morning group, Copper, Clover, Everest, Guinny-pig, Nicky, Marty, Riley, Ryder and Ziggy were very good dogs. Marty was a little cheeky and had a great time teasing the older boys Ryder and Riley but I secretly think that they love the attention. Another beautiful day for dogs!
The morning group was a bit scattered when we got to Southland. It was like everyone had their own agenda and were bound and determined to fulfill it. Riley had joined up with some friends he met last week - Dudley and his brother. Not sure the brother's name but when J is not around this little white guy is Riley BFF. So I rounded up the guys and we headed off to catch up with Riley. Luckily he was not too far ahead and we all went to the north end of the park. Much to the dogs' dismay the puddles had dried up over the weekend and there was nothing to immerse themselves in. This made me very happy. By the end of the walk the dogs were being good so I took them to the river to get a drink. Copper, Everest, Whistler and Bruin really enjoy splashing around. Ryder not so much but he tagged along like a little trooper.
The afternoon group was quite calm today. We started off playing ball at Edworthy but since Bailey loves to fetch and she hurt herself last week we could only play for a few minutes. Even without the injury the dogs managed to loose two balls in about 10 minutes. Gabby and Pina were determined to continue playing ball and searched madly for any piece of tennis ball they could find and thrust at me. Nina and Shea were very social today and I had to keep calling them back as they cruised the park looking for dogs to greet. Wilbur, Mitch and Auzzie were the cutest group of little hairy boys I had since Friday! Auzzie with his long legs is outgrowing Mitch and Wilbur but he is still the youngest so even though he can stand over top of the other two he still gets occasionally bamboozled by them.
Taylor was practicing her lion act and was stocking (in a humorous way) other dogs. It is funny to watch her slow down, then crouch down and then slowly move toward the other dogs. It is a good thing she is so funny looking or people might think she is threatening.
All in all a lovely day.

Yet another gorgeous day in Calgary!
The morning group went to Southland. Copper, Everest, J, Riley, Rover, Ryder and Whistler made up my extremely mellow group. They basically divided into two factions - big guys and little guys and never the two groups shall meet. At one point I was standing on the mounds of dirt just to get a good view of both groups. One thing that they all had in common was that they loved the refreshed mud puddles. Frozen mud puddles is the only thing I am looking forward to winter for.
The afternoon group was a bit jazzed up when we got to the park to start with and then a crazy guy decided to take his frustration at the world out on me which made them act up even more. Luckily the guy was harmless this time. I later learned he often takes his frustrations out on dog walkers.
The gang was large and I wanted to get away from the parking lot so we did not stick around to play ball. Turned out this was OK as there were lots of kids and dogs to play with and chase (chasing was done with the dogs only.) Gabby and Pina were making friends all over the place - loving anyone with two hands that was willing to pet them. Nina and Shea mainly kept to themselves today which is odd but OK since they weren't having sisterly squabbles. Wilbur, Mitch and Auzzie were as cute as cute gets again today. I love watching them thoroughly enjoy each other's company. Taylor was back with the group after a month long trip to "dog camp" while her mom and dad toured Europe. She was happy to be back with her buddies. Frank and Bailey were my steady, stable and always predictable dogs.

How many more days like today can we expect to get? It was another beautiful day for dogs.
Both groups went to Southland. In the morning group we had Kip, Clover, Copper, Everest, Guinness, Nicky, Marty, Ryder, Erckle and Leo. (Kip and Leo are from Jen's group.) All the dogs got along great and were very friendly with each other and everyone else at the park after the first 10 minutes of course. The first 10 - 15 minutes they all act like clowns and after a long weekend today was not different. We went to the water and played in the mud for a while and then rediscovered old paths through the grass to wipe the muddy paws on.
The afternoon group was a bit more scattered and they all seemed to want to go in different directions. After several minutes of searching around for the sacred poop spots that they all seem to have I managed to fill another grocery bag of poop and not very much of it was from our dogs.
Auzzie and Wilbur acted like they had not seen each other since yesterday (when we ran into Auzzie and his family at the park and those two could NOT be separated.) Grannie Annie had to check out all the smells in great detail. The oddest couple Rover and Bella had a gas chasing the bike riders on the other side of the fence. All the riders took it in stride and tried to out run the dogs. Dutch was very flirty today. She was really making googly eyes at Jager (an Akida) and then with a fat choco lab (never got his name). She usually likes to play with the little boys but was digging the big boys today. Owen had his paws full when Wilbur and Auzzie decided that they were taking the "tall one" down. I caught the two of them trying to hang off Owens scruff. He was good natured about it but was not really happy for that kind of attention.
All in all a lovely day to walk off the turkey and pie hangover! I hope you all enjoyed your dinner and time with family and friends this Thanksgiving!!

This morning was so quiet and easy it was almost like a day off! The group - Kip, Frank, Everest, Rover, Riley, Ryder, Whistler and Bruin were so mellow that I was able to do my good deed for the week and clean up the park after all the weekend warriors messed it up. Good works, happy dogs, sunny weather! How can you beat it.
And then.....the afternoon group (surprise! surprise!) was considerably more rowdy and more difficult to manage.
Without giving any names in the first 10 minutes: I had been jumped on seven times, barked at, one had rolled in poop, another had eaten poop, several blankets had been removed from the back of the truck and dragged around the park in a rousing game of "catch me if you can", and then there were at least two (failed) attempts at domination all to the tune of a half a dozen dogs yowling, whining and barking for attention. Luckily, they calmed down once we got moving and the rest of the walk was peaceful.
Even after all that I still love them all!

Another glorious day fall day in Calgary.
The morning group got to take advantage of the river at Southland park. Kip, Everest. Whistler, Riley, Rover and Wilbur enjoyed splashing around for a few minutes. Ryder does not partake in water sports so he patiently waited for the guys to have their drink and get a little wet so the dust would stick real good. And real good it did stick. After frolicking in the water for a while we decided to move on as the dogs were getting restless and it is best to keep them moving. Much to my surprise they all obediently got out of the river and followed into the field where they began searching out the source of all those delicious smells in the tall grass. There must have been a bunch of deer or coyotes that slept near by as they were fascinated by the flattened grass and interesting aromas. Since it was Friday and the group was small the dogs had a little extra time to meet and greet the other dogs and people before it was time to go home.
The afternoon group went to Edworthy. Auzzie, Bailey, Frank, Gabby, Pina, Sam, Sidney, Wilbur and Wilson were overly excited to get to the park. It was hot enough in the afternoon to have gone swimming but when you travel with air conditioning it is hard to gauge the ambient temp. Sorry guys! They would have loved to swim. We played ball for several minutes and then the dogs were letting me know that it was getting to warm so they chugged almost several litres of water and we were off exploring. The dogs were pretty mellow given the heat so we stuck to the wooded areas where they could find shade.
The ride home was much quieter!

The rain kinda scared me this morning but alas everything turned out OK.
Both groups went to Southland today. The morning group was very mellow. Riley needs a chaperon when we first get to the park so Whistler was dragging him around while I cleaned up the poop. Neither was happy with the situation and when I separated them Riley ran to J and they they were off playing together. They are too cute when they wrestle and dance and generally go to their own little place of happiness. By the end of the walk they were back to the real world and ready to get into the truck for a nap on the way home. Frolicking takes a lot out of a guy. Ryder tried to join the fun but could not keep up with frivolity so he went back to being too cool and hanging back.
Copper, Kip, Whistler and Everest found a serious retriever fan and took full advantage of her generous petting skills. It is amazing how they can pick out the ones that REALLY like labs and goldens and then work it. I had to shoo them off after several minutes as they were starting to embarrass themselves.
After shooing them off from the wonderful retriever lady we ran smack dab into a daycare picnic at the park. Not only is that dangerous and stupid it is GROSS! The dogs were cooperative about leaving the area but only after a very firm "come".
The afternoon group got to go swimming which I thought would settle them down. Au contraire. It only served to excited them more. We had to leave the swimming area when it began to get crowded and poor little Auzzie had started to shiver. He was cold and frustrated that he did not know how to swim and could not get the ball. The dogs were still rowdy so I took them to the field (away from everyone else) so they could dry off and settle down. Once they started to settle into exploring the grass and the wonders of mice and other creatures a male husky came bounding into the pack. I watched the dogs reaction to the interloper and the young ones (Auzzie, Wilbur, Mitch, Nina and Shea) went straight over for investigation/introductions. Then it actually seemed like Everest and Sid, as the biggest adult males of the pack, separated the husky from the pack and began a formal "once over". Once that was done they "released" him to continue his play with the others.
I find it fascinating to watch the pack behaviour. I would love to find out if my assessments are anywhere near accurate.

Another glorious but busy day for me and the dogs.
The morning group went to Southland and they were bursting with energy by the time we got there. Vinnie blue eyes was a late addition to the group this morning but was very welcome by the Pinkney boys (Nicky and Guinness.) The three of them were tearing up the park together. Usually Nicky and Guinny just play with each other but Vinnie used his charms to work his way into their little micro-pack. Par for course Guinness came home as Guinny-pig and was dusty and covered with slobber. At one point Copper joined in on the fun and he took off like a shot with his butt curled under and just zoomed like a maniac up and down the river bank. I moved myself and the little dogs to the relative protection of the bench so that we would not be knocked down.
Little Marty did not have a playful little guys to hang with so he proceeded to take a page from Vinnie's book and started teasing all the bigger dogs in order to get them to play. This did not go over very well for poor little Marty.
Clover is feeling much better these days and seems to have recovered nicely from her surgery earlier this summer. She is still chatty and wants to be played with.
Erckle and Ryder just trotted along like good little boys.
The afternoon group was big and rowdy (as usual!) In a move I did not condone Auzzie and Wilbur decided that jumping all over Owen complete with barking and growling would be fun thing to do. Luckily Owen is a gentle giant and just tried to out run them. Later the little brats tried the same thing with Pina. They both must be feeling the "little man" syndrome.
When we got to the north end of the field the bigger dogs discoved a well-used dead mouse which they sniffed and then wisely decided to leave. Wilbur, ever the piglet, saw it as an opportunity for an afternoon snack and jumped at the chance to pick it up and strut around with it. Once he realized that no one else wanted it he was OK with dropping it so I could put it in a bag.
Owen was sitting in the back seat of the truck on the way home. I could hear that he was very busy back there but could not see what he was doing. When I finally got him home I discovered that he had opened a rubbermaid container and extracted all the tennis balls and had skinned one. He had also removed the towels and blankets that were protecting the seats.
Cheetos, Dutch, Bella, and Wilson were the behaviour stars of the group!! Thanks for being so good.

Manic Monday? Not Really
Another wonderful day for dogs in Calgary!
The morning group went to Southland (as usual). Marty was able to join us today (he usually is a Tues/Thurs guy), Kip from Jen's group, Everest, Copper, Riley, Rover, Ryder, Nina, Shea and Bruin. So with the addition of the extra dogs the group was quite large. They were a bit scattered and all over the place but still very good once I got everyone going in the same direction.
The afternoon group went to Edworthy and consisted of Selky and Austin (from Jen's group), Mitch, Bailey, Auzzie, Frank, Gabby, Pina, Sam and Wilbur. I was not sure how the two dogs from Jen's group would react to being with a whole new pack. I worried for no good reason as they both were very well behaved except for some very expressive barking and whining with excitement. I can handle that. Having my core group of girls - Bailey, G & P and Sam - helped as I did not have to worry about their behaviour and could focus on the new guys and the little guys (Wilbur, Mitch and Auzzie.) Those three are quite tight and sometimes get distracted when they are having so much fun.
Tip from your dog walker: All the dogs including my own could use a little tutorial from you on the concept of stay. This should be an easy one as they don't really have to do anything. Try using feeding times, going out the door and any other activity that the dog wants to do to teach this invaluable skill. State the command one time only and then reward the dog when the command is obeyed (providing supper, opening the door for a walk, etc.).

Sorry no blog on Tuesday. Everest and I went to see the old people at Father Lacombe nursing home. PALS is always looking for more dogs to visit the old folk, disabled people, children's hospital and for reading PALS at the public libraries. Let me know if you would like more information.
Today was another beautiful day for dogs. The morning group went to Southland. Whistler and Everest received a surprise visit from an old friend and were beside themselves with excitement and when Whistler (as the canine leader of the pack) is excited it amps the energy of the other dogs and they got excited about the surprise guest. So everyone was was deliriously giddy and most of them were not sure why. Meeko was super happy to out with his buddies at the park. He always enjoys his time meeting and greeting everyone. When it was time to go he kept evading me so he could visit just one more person eventually I had to take him by the collar and drag him out of the park. No small feat considering he is a Great Dane. My team of nervous nelly little boys were very well behaved and stayed close to the pack. At one point Riley took advantage of the extra excitement and deeked under the gates and bee-lined to the river. He was quickly retrieved and had to do the walk of shame back to the group.
The afternoon was noisy and a bit overly warm for the first day of fall. We went to Edworthy and due to a multitude of factors we ended up being later than usual. The gang was so noisy - each trying to out bark the other all way to park. We tried for a game of fetch to take the edge off but it was just too warm so everyone got a drink and we headed off to explore. Everyone was their usual selves: Auzzie, Mitch and Wilbur were almost too cute, Gabby and Pina made friends with all the men in the park (can those girls flirt!), Sid lapped us a couple times and the labs chugged along.
Getting everyone settled in the truck took time as no one wanted to go home.
On a sad note our sweet old friend Hollie the collie died this week. She was 13 years old and loved dearly by her best friend Duane. She will be missed.
It was a weird and wonderful day for dogs. We started out in the pouring rain and by half way through the first walk the sun was shining and by the second walk it was quite warm.
The first group went to Southland. Bruin, Everest, Copper, Riley, Rover, Ryder, Whistler, Wilbur and Erckle were happy to be out and about after a long weekend cooped up. Well, Everest, Whistler, Erckle and Rover were cooped up all weekend. Because of the rain there weren't that many people and dogs at the park so we almost had the place to ourselves. Everyone was on their best behaviour which made me very proud.
The second group went to Edworthy and in true afternoon group fashion they were nutty and impatient and literally fell out of the truck when I opened the tailgate. The group was a little large as we had some unexpected company - Casey (the tiny Schnauzer) and Sierra (the extra large Shepard cross) joined us and they were probably the best behaved of the bunch.
Poor Frank had a sore leg so he was a little slow and would hide in the grass while the other dogs played fetch. All the other dogs except for Copper and Casey got into playing fetch. Gabby and Pina seem to always get to the ball first but everyone else tries really hard including Mitch and Auzzie (the two littlest guys on the walk today.) Sam and Bailey love to play fetch but can't keep up with G & P so I faked G & P out and then throw the ball the other way for Sam and Bailey. They appreciated the gesture and were happy to bring the balls right back to me. Once fetch was over we headed out to do some exploring. Someone (who will remain nameless) found some fresh poop to roll in and then proceeded to befriend all the people at the park. They got a rude awakening when I yelled at them "don't touch her!" YUCKY!!

What?? Another gorgeous day for a walk! How lucky can we get?
The morning group was small and happy. Copper, Everest, Riley, Rover, Ryder, Whistler and Wilbur enjoyed the fresh morning air and an extra long walk (1hr 45 min).
When we first got to the park the big boys (Everest, Copper and Rover) got a little jazzed up as there seemed to be an overabundance of intact male pups at the park. This made them want to chase and if the other dog was willing to oblige them by running away - all the better. No one was hurt except me as the three monster-sized dogs hit my lower leg causing quite a bruise. Needless to say we all took a time out to sit and/or lay down in the grass and calm down. This helped tremendously and then we all took off to finish the walk and they all behaved like little lambs. We met up with Sylvia and Ace and Jen and her pack for the last few minutes.
Ryder, Wilbur and Riley were smart enough to stay away from the big clowns when they were acting up. Thanks boys!
The afternoon group was small as well. Auzzie, Bailey, Gabby, Pina, Sam, Wilbur and Everest went to Edworthy and it was beautiful as well. All the dogs are ball dogs so we started off by playing fetch for about 20 minutes (or until all the tongues were hanging out the side of the mouths) then everyone had a drink and we set off to do some exploring around the park. All the dogs made me proud with their behaviour.

Wonderful Wednesday
Another beautiful but windy day for the dogs. The morning group went to Southland.
Everyone (Vinnie, Copper, J, Nina, Riley, Rover, Ryder, Shea and Everest) were in such good moods. All the dogs were happy and listening (wow!) After a short summer break J and Riley seem to have rekindled their bromance. They frolicked together in the tall grass and were practically inseparable. I am not sure if Vinnie was jealous of the love but he was getting a kick out of goading them to let him play too. They said NO. Rover loves to chase anything - dogs, bikes, etc. but usually the thing being chased doesn't enjoy the experience because he is so big and noisy. Today he found another dog that loved to be chased. This other dog was tall and skinny and Rover is short and stalky so it looked ridiculous to watch them run together. At one point they were criss crossing over the path and behind the tall grass and the mounds of dirt. They looked like those old cartoons where the characters chase each other down a long hall going in and out of doors.
The afternoon group was equally as good as the morning guys. We went to Edworthy and as we arrived so did Jen and Amy with their packs so we all walked together. It actually turned out really well. There were not too many other people at the park and each of took turns leading and we always had one person trailing behind to watch for wanderers and stray poopers.
Sidney was just a blur for the entire walk. He moves so fast I think he lapped the park a couple of times before we hit the first big hill. When he does slow down he loves to play and since Auzzie has been around Sid has taken to "showing him the ropes."
When we first got to the park and I was cleaning up the poop I tethered Annie and Casey together (two little old girls) so that they would not wander away and get lost in the tall grass. Neither was pleased by this. If looks could kill. Later I tethered Annie to an big old boy named Jax. He is from Amy's pack. He moves slow and loves to stop and sniff everything as does Annie but because he is so big I know that Annie would not get lost and they could safely enjoy the smells and a slower pace. We were calling them Grannie Annie and Grampa Jax.
Wilson came along for the walk this afternoon because his mom was so busy. He loves to sing songs in the truck and gets much louder the closer we get to the park. I was very happy to get him out of the back seat. He doesn't come out much with us but because he is such a good boy he was able to blend in and make friends like he had always been with us.

Terrific Tuesday
Another cool one. Considering last Tuesday I was in the water with the dogs this is a bit of a shocker. But at least it keeps the solar powered dog walkers home where they belong.
The morning group was big and rowdy for a change - usually it is the other way around. At 6:45 this morning Wilbur showed up at my house and the day began. Wilbur and Marty who are thick as thieves played themselves out wrestling and chasing each other. Wilbur would start to run and then look back over his shoulder at Marty to make sure he was coming too. Marty did enjoy playing with Wilbur but he also enjoys teasing Erckle. Poor Erckle is not athletic and is really built to cuddle not rough it up at the dog park and he was not pleased to have Marty picking (read "humping") him. Erckle stayed close to me for protection from the 5 pound Marty. Guinness lived up to his nickname "Guiny-pig" and was covered in slobber and dirt from hanging out with Vinnie-blue-eyes. They had a gas together and Nicky did not even seem to mind sharing his little brother with Vinnie. Everest, Bruin, Rover and Whistler just minded their own business and kept themselves clean which is a minor miracle that they have not submerged themselves in the septic swamp once this week.
The afternoon group was relatively small and we walked with Sylvia and Ace. Cheetos and Grannie Annie were not happy to be out in the frigid weather (their words not mine) and made a production of their displeasure. It was quite cute when Wilbur, Bella, Dutch and Auzzie started chasing Copper. He tucked his tail and started running in circles with a huge grin on his big yellow face. The entire gang was trying to keep up. It was funny to see a big monster like Copper being silly and puppy like. Owen was very chatty today. I had given him and Everest and Wilbur three balls when we arrived at the park and they lost them within 10 minutes and was most miffed that I would not dig out more for his playing pleasure.

Manic Monday?
The weather has cooled down but it did not slow the dogs in the least.
The morning group went to Southland and included Vinnie-blue-eyes, Bruin, Copper, Everest, Riley, Rover, Ryder and Whistler. Vinnie was his usual charming self and was doing his best to get the party started. He loves to tease the other dogs to get them to play and succeeded with most of them. We met up with Jen and her group and everyone got along nicely after not seeing each other for over a week. Riley was not "into the group experience" today and consequently had to be walked (anchored) by Whistler. Ryder has his own group of friends at the park and thought hanging out with them might be a good idea. About half way through the walk they both came around decided to join their group and were let off their leashes. Mondays can be hard.
We did not make a trip to the river as it was cool and no one was over heating. The retrievers did not like that but went along reluctantly.
The afternoon group went to Edworthy. Bailey, Auzzie, Copper, Nina, Gabby, Pina, Sam, Wilbur, Shea and Mitch enjoyed the cooler weather and seeing old friends at the park. We haven't spent much time there this summer as it is too hot and there is no access to the river. G & P were quite adamant that SOMEONE play ball with them and they did not care who it was. They would thrust their ball at every person they saw. Luckily all the people at the park were dog lovers today and everyone thought they were cute (persistent but cute!) Wilbur, Auzzie and Mitch were soooo adorable again today. I have to figure out how to get video of the three of them playing into the blog as it so sweet. They just love each other and are the life of the party. I love the way they welcomed Auzzie into the fold without any of the usual pack initiation that the older dog do. Auzzie did learn today that not everyone loves a puppy and got his first "roughing up" by an older jack russell terrier (from another group). The main thing was he wasn't hurt and was able to shake it off and get back to playing with the little guys in his pack.
Near the end of the walk we ended up converging with three other dog walkers and had a big visit and then all walked to the trucks together. There must have been up to 35 dogs together. I just love this type of experience as all the dogs got along peacefully and playfully. A very nice way to end the day.

Chiens Chaut
Hot dogs today! And hot walkers (temperature I mean).
Both groups went to Southland today. The temperature hovered around 27 - 28 degrees and the dogs' tongues were hanging.
The morning group was relatively small and well behaved. Copper, Clover, Guinness, Nicky, Riley, Ryder, Ziggy and Frank all behaved and got along really well. They did not want to leave the water but as they became increasingly excited and eager to steal balls I thought it best to keep moving. As I got seven of them to the top of the river bank one would sneak back down and so the game began with one coming up and then two going down. Good thing they all figured out how to scramble up the on the rocks without help from me.
The afternoon group was large but super well behaved. My daughter Lauren came with us which was a big help. Auzzie, Mitch, Wilbur and Marty were the highlight of the day. They did not seem too bothered by the heat and played and chased and rolled all over each other. The three older little guys act like long lost litter mates when they see each other and have eagerly accepted Auzzie as one of their own. Even when we stopped in the shade to cool off the big guys Wilbur and Auzzie were laying on their sides and continuing the play. Too cute!!
We tried to go to the water but everyone was at the water and the number of dogs made it chaotic so we headed to the field and ended up spending most of the time wandering in the tall grass under the trees (I found a lot of forgotten/missed poop in their). While at the water Owen and Everest made most of the time he had and ended up being hauled out by Lauren and leashed for the walk up the path.
Little Casey was with us today and even though she is the smallest and probably the oldest dog in the pack she led us and we all had to struggle to keep up with her.
Bailey and Sam always my trusty sidekicks were good and game for anything offered with no complaints or attempts to try something else. Miss Bella ran into her arch "fence enemy" who lives next door and was a little too pleased to have the open area to express her feelings towards this dog. Luckily the other owner realized what was going on and we were able to defuse the feuding females.
Rover, the disgusting piglet, got into the fenced off swamp and came back to the truck smelling like he had been in a septic tank. Yucky Rover!!
And what can I say about Cheetos? He is a bit girthy and the heat caused him to feel a bit faint. Good thing Lauren was there to act as his Sherpa and to carry him. Poor Cheetos.

Crazy Traffic Day
Another gorgeous day in Calgary! Both groups went to Southland Park.
The morning group consisted of: Copper, Kip, J, Riley, Rover, Ryder, Whistler, Wilbur and Everest. We started out walking in the big field and of course all the dogs except for J and Ryder found the mud puddles. Will these things ever dry up? They were all gross and sticky and had to be herded down to the river to wash off. Some of the dogs could not wait to get to the river and snuck under the fence for a quick dip before the rest of us got there. It amazed me that Rover, at over 80 pounds was able to squeeze under the fence and get into the river along with Wilbur and Riley (both no more than 20 pounds each.) J was back from two weeks vacation and looking and feeling fine!
The afternoon group got a late start due to traffic on Elbow and various other little delays throughout the late morning and early afternoon. The dogs were quite nutty when I started letting them out in small groups. I thought that all of them at once may overwhelm some of the other park users. Everyone else at the park today was very patient with a pack of excited doggies. Auzzie really enjoyed meeting Nina. Shea was not interested in sharing her little sister though so the two little ones had to keep their fun down to short spurts. Auzzie is gaining confidence every day and even got his tummy wet in the river. Sidney was playing very nice with the little guy - teaching him how to wrestle like a big boy.
The dogs went to the river for a short swim and when they became a bit to rowdy and were stealing balls I took them out to the field where they rolled and scratched their back in the dry grass. Gabby, Pina, Bailey and Sam were not happy to leave the water however they did follow the rest of the gang.
All the dogs were patient as they could be as we battled traffic back home. Here's hoping the weather keeps up and the traffic settles down.

We're Back
Thank you all for being patient while I had my "mental" if not "physical" vacation. It is the most wonderful time of the year. The kids are back in school and the solar powered dog walkers are dwindling in numbers.
This was a very busy day and both groups were full of wild-eyed and excited dogs. Luckily, my daughter Lauren is on vacation this week and was able to help out today. The morning group was happy to get to the park and a little impatient getting out of the truck. Once we were all safely in the park Bella, Copper, Everest, Guinness, Nicky, Marty, Ryder, Kip (from Lets Get Walked), Clover and Whistler enjoyed the sunshine and fresh open spaces. We went to the water to start with and all the dogs got right into it. Unfortunately none of them were interested in keeping track of the ball and it was lost after only three throws. It is a good thing I don't spent a lot of money on their toys. After losing the ball we headed to the field to walk.
Marty thought it would be a good idea to tease Ryder. Ryder tried to act like he was not into the attention but clearly enjoyed giving it right back to little Marty.
Clover, who is just recovering from surgery a couple of weeks ago, did super awesome and was (almost) her old chatty happy self. Go Clover!!!
The afternoon group was extremely rowdy as usual. Today we had Lucy and Tucker join the walk. They don't come out with us often but when they do they make an impression. Both were extremely excited and impatient to get to the park. As it was hot we headed for the river. On the way Lucy, Tucker, Everest, Rover, Dutch, Copper and Owen soaked themselves in the horribly sticky muddy swamp water. They came out covered in a slick black goo similar to used motor oil. We sped up and bee-lined to the river. Once at the river the dogs quickly cleaned off and having no balls decided to steal what they wanted from other dogs. That is OK if you are willing to give them back - some of our group who shall remain nameless was not willing to do that.
I almost forgot to mention - we have a new pack member. His name is Auzzie and he is an Australian shepherd mix and about 4½ months old. He is all legs, ears and big eyes. He will be out for walks every afternoon while his "mom and dad" are at work. Wilbur and Mitch are his best friends. He is a little shy but always stays with the group and listens quite well for such a young dog.
Auzzie tried out the water today. He only went up to his tummy but that is an improvement over last week. Wilbur showed him how easy it is (if a pug can do it anyone can.)
Speaking of pugs - Cheetos, the crown prince of Calgary, was NOT pleased to be out in this inclement weather. He huffed and puffed at the pack of the pack. He was really pleased that Lauren was there to give him the attention he deserves and was able to just barely keep from melting into a pile of hair and bulging eyeballs for her sake.
All in all not bad start to the week!

The dogs were so good today that they were almost boring!
The morning group consisted of Everest, Whistler, Riley and Rover. I kept getting confused as I am not used to only walking four doggies - especially four mature dogs.
The dogs trotted happily around the park looking for muddy puddles to lay down in and run through. Then it was a quick trip down to the river to wash off and back to the truck. Whistler wanted to stay at the river because there was a little boy she thought she could have fun with but did come along when she realized that he was probably too little for her anyway.
The afternoon was a bit more unweildy but never the less just as well behaved. This group got to go to Shouldice for an afternoon swim. It seemed so hot in the morning but really wasn't when we got to the park. This did not deter the hard core swimmers - Gabby, Pina, Bruin, Sammy, Bailey and Shea nor did it deter the not so hard core swimmers - Frank, Wilbur, Nina and Taylor who still enjoyed playing around the water and trying to steal balls.

Today both groups went to Southland.
The morning group welcomed Toshka. He is 3½ year old Schoodle and is a friend and neighbour of Ryder (who is also a schoodle - very handy for evening and weekend play!) Toshka was a little nervous at first having never been out with the group but seemed to relax into it as the walk went on. By the time we jumped back into the truck for the ride home he was "chillin" in the back seat with Guinness and did not have a care in the world.
Marty was thrilled to see Wilbur this morning. As soon as Marty was put in the truck the two of them were at it and they did not stop until I dragged Marty out of the truck at his house. It was challenging to get and keep the two of them in the crate as they were like two little greased piglets - wiggly and squirming around.
Bruin came back from holidays today looking very relaxed and happy to see his friends again. He along with Ziggy and Nicky kept a pretty low profile and just enjoyed going in the water and checking out all the smells and sights.
One of the fantastic things discovered by Jen's group was a porcupine. About six dogs scented the poor thing and were trying to get behind a tree to have closer inspection. Sometimes dogs are so dumb. We all hightailed it out of that area of the park.
The afternoon group was bit schizo. There all seemed to want to go in different directions and do different things. The only thing that they all had in common was their uncontrollable need to be in the mud puddles. Will they ever GO AWAY??? The only one of the group that did not immerse herself was Bella. YAY Bella! Even Cheetos went in but only to his knees because a prince really should not get muddy in front of the lower breeds. The mud stuck to Grannie Annie's coat like concrete as she laid herself in the mud bushy tail and all.
Bella and Rover were palling around. They both enjoy chasing the bikers down the path from inside the fence. Occasionally you will see a small black streak (Wilbur pumping hard to keep up) behind them. They both come back grinning like fools and quite proud of their efforts to keep the park safe from bikes.
Clover's mom left out a bottle of water and collapsible water dish to take on the walk and all the dogs declined the fresh water except for Owen who grabbed the dish after consuming the water and taking off with it like it was toy.
I love my furry friends.

Well the day started off beautifully. The morning group went to Southland and we met up with Jen's group and despite the fact we had over a dozen retrievers they managed to lose the only ball.
Copper, Everest and Whistler enjoyed the water and in fact Whistler would not leave the water when it was time to go home. I had to take the dogs to the truck, load them up, turn on the air conditioning and then go back down to get her out of the river. On the way down people were giving me status updates as to her whereabouts. If you know of anyone who would like a (more than) slightly used golden please let me know.
Ryder was the bright one and stayed hunkered down in the dewy grass. He is so small that I have lost site of him only to find him by his big eyes sticking out between the blades of grass. Urkle suffered at the hands of the overly "affectionate" Marty this morning. Marty thought this was great fun!
Marty and Guiness got into a little chasing game. I have never seen those two play before. It was quite enjoyable and Guinness did not forget his older brother and BFF Nicky when he was playing with Marty either.
The afternoon group went to Southland as well. We met up with my friend Debra and the challenged adult she works with. The young man was very shy around the dogs but also seemed to really enjoy throwing the Frisbee for them. Owen and Wilbur especailly liked the extra attention. They could only stay at the park for the first part of our walk and the second part of the walk seemed like a good idea but quickly turned mighty ugly. Once we reached the northern most part of the park the thunder, lightening and pelting rain started. By the time we had hustled back to the truck everyone was soaked right through and eager to jump in the truck except for Wilbur of course. He wanted to play "catch me if you can". I was glad that I had a soggy piece of kibble in my pocket to entice him to the truck or we would have drown playing that stupid game. All the dogs were soaked and dirty and looking so miserable. Grannie Annie, Cheetos and Clover took it the hardest and were shivering and not at all appreciative of my laughing at them. Cheetos did however like that I said he looked rugged.
It was a bit surprising (and very nice) that none of the dogs panicked at the thunder and lightening.

A beautifully lazy, hot summer day. Not a lot of dogs walking with us today due to holidays and moving.
Today we said good-bye to long time friends and really my first customers Miles and Penny Barker. Miles and Penny moved with their owners back to Texas. Hopefully we will see them again. I know I will miss them very much.
The morning group went to Southland and it was hot already. The dogs were a little distracted when we first got to the park. After several attempts to leave the parking lot area I finally had everyone's attention and we were off.
Riley, Everest, Rover, Whistler, Ryder and Copper tried to get some water time but since Rover thinks all the beach areas are his own private domain he was not pleased to share with the other dogs at the park. He was OK with his pack being on his beach but no one else was welcome. As you can imagine this did not go over very well with the river users and we had to move on frequently so as not to make enemies.
The afternoon group ended up at Southland as well. Gabby, Pina, Sam, Copper, Taylor, Wilbur and Everest got to enjoy more river time. We still moved through the four main swimming holes just for variety not to avoid icy stares. Everyone, except Taylor, got into swimming and fetching balls. Even little Wilbur went after several balls all on his own. It was so cute to see him try to stay afloat and pick up the ball in his mouth. Several times he had to duck his end under water in order to get enough force to pop the ball in and then swim back. Gramma was very proud! Taylor doesn't know what she is missing. She only went in up to her knees but managed to find others of like mind to stalk and chase along the river's edge. The five retrievers obviously dominated the waterways. Our group is definitely full of hearty swimmers.
Seeing them all so happy, wet and excited is one of my favourite things in the world.

Weird and wonderful Calgary weather again today. Started out with sheets of rain and ended up hot and muggy.
The morning group went to Southland. Miles, Penny, Ryder, Copper, Everest, J, Riley, Rover and Wilbur enjoyed the walk despite the drastically changing weather. Ace and Sylvia joined us about half way through which was very nice for Riley. He really likes Ace and J wasn't in the mood to be playful today. I think J is still reeling from being hosed down a couple weeks ago after he rolled around in a mud puddle. Poor J - his memory is too long.
The afternoon group, consisting of Bailey, Copper, Frank, Gabby, Pina, Nina, Shea, Sidney and Taylor, went to Edworthy and it was down right hot when we got there. The puddles were big again but a little fancy dancing and running with a tennis ball over my head kept everyone focused on me and not the dirty water. We walked with Jen's group for a while. When we were coming down the hill we noticed that Sid and Cannon were MIA. They like to play rough together so we thought they were just distracted at the top of the hill. After about a minute or so of waiting we saw Sid coming barrelling down the hill. He was just giving it all he had to catch up with us. Luckily his brakes were working this time (sometimes his brakes fail him and he runs right into the other dogs.)
I tired the dogs out with a "hill training" which involves throwing a ball down a steep hill and making them hustle up and down. All dogs were hanging out after that exercise.

Another beautiful day for dogs. Both groups went to Southland.
Eli, Bruin, Copper, Guinness, Everest, Nicky, Rez, Ziggy and Riley spent most of the morning walk in the water, rolling in the dirt and making friends. We started out the walk with Acara's group which was fun for Riley as she had lots of little guys he could play with. I am still amazed that Riley likes to swim. He doesn't go far out which is good because he is quite little and could get carried away. At the river bank he was the boss of the apple sauce and all the dogs had to get by him before being able to get up the bank. Ev, Bruin, Copper and Eli fetched a little bit and then they would squabble over who was going to bring the ball back up to me and it ended up that in the end no one did and we had to move on as the ball floated away. Nicky, Rez and Guiny-pig (collectively known as the Pinkney kids) don't really dig swimming but did enjoy splashing around and getting dirty. Rez went home with a crusty undercarriage from all the mud drying on her coat.
The stars of the afternoon group were Wilbur, Onyx, Marty and Mitch. Imagine four little gray/black pups (6 - 15 months old) playing together. People were stopping to watch them roll on each other, fall down, chase and generally be too cute for words. One couple told me that they could watch the little guys play all day. I could too. After all the other dogs practically knocked me down to get to the truck (I was just getting them some fresh water) I let the four cuties play some more.
Rover, Cheetos, Clover and Frank were not bad dogs just hot dogs and they thought I was getting ready to leave and they wanted to secure their spot in the truck more than they wanted an extra 15 minutes to play. Sam was just plain tired and was happy to rest in the grass and watch the little dogs play as well.

It was a HOT one today. Not complaining at all.
The morning group spent some time at the river and thoroughly enjoyed getting wet. Riley was swimming in the shallow parts, Meeko was running up and down the bank, and everyone else was splashing around. Bruin found a fantastic kong toy with tassels on it but quickly lost interest in it that is until Wilbur decided he wanted it. It barely fit in his little mouth but he was strutting around with this thing. The strutting made Bruin want it again and the fight was on. There should not have been any competition as Wilbur is a 20 pound pug and Bruin is a 90 pound mix. Bruin was dragging and trying to shake Wilbur off the toy but he was a determined littl guy. At one point they were on the dirt path and Wilbur's feet looked liked they were smoking as he was being dragged along. Neither would let go so the toy could be played with and eventually they both lost interest and it is laying in a field somewhere at Southland.
Riley and J must have had a spat as they did not seem to be as into each other as they normally are. I think that J was worried that if he got gross and dirty again I would hose him down and he did not want that to happen. Riley just doesn't care and will have a good time and consequences be damned.
Some of the dogs got into the swampy water on the way back to the truck so I took them on a zig-zag through the tall grass. In some places it is as high as my waist. It is funny to see them bounding and scurrying through the field. Lots of bugs which is only slightly better than the potential of 8 stinky dogs.
The afternoon group went to Southland as well and it was even hotter by then. The gang was able to go to the river and spend all our time there. I forgot to set the timer when I got to the park to remind us to start back to the truck so the guys got about an hour and 45 minutes.
Gabby, Bailey, Pina and Everest played fetch in the water consistently from the moment we reached the shore until I dragged them out. Wilbur and Mitch played with their own ball and Wilbur actually swam with the big guys (it wasn't a life saving manoeuvre this time.) Mitch doesn't swim yet but maybe by the end of the summer he will be into it. Mitch and Wilbur both love to steal balls and run like crazy with them. Taylor was looking at the water and the water dogs like they were a lower life form and then the next minute she was wading in tentatively. Too bad she got splashed and then dashed out or who knows how far she would have gone. We were all grateful that Sidney went for a swim because he literally soaked himself in the slimy swamp water. He was all slick and looked like he was covered in grease. I did not get close enough to smell him but I know it would have been gross.
Not a peep was heard on the ride home.

Monday after a Long Weekend
The morning group went to Southland and was boringly well behaved except for one minor incident. Everest, Copper, Jin, Riley, Rover, Whistler, Nina and Shea were so good I could have stayed in the truck and called them after an hour. They all b-lined to the special mud trough in the north field only to find it gloriously dry!! I took pity on them and was walking them back to the truck to get a drink of fresh water and they found one last stagnant, extremely smelly wet spot and immersed themselves in it. Oh well out to the long grass to try and dry them before loading up. That was fun especially for Riley as he was the only little guy in the pack.
The afternoon group went to Shouldice for a dip in the river. It has come down quite a bit and the dogs weren't having any challenges navigating the current. All the regular retriever girls - Bailey, Sam, Pina and Gabby plus our new guy Onyx competed hard for the balls but only G & P had staying power and sheer grit to keep it up as long as I would. The non-swimmers such as Wilbur, Clover and Taylor waded in the water but preferred to play with each other on the shore. Frank went in for a quick dip as well but is very cautious around the big dogs as he is afraid to get trampled so he preferred to snuffle in the grass and have a look around the area.
On the way back to the truck we ran into some little boys and what dog doesn't love little boys (well except for Frank). They were very firm with the dogs making them sit before they would pet. G & P loved this attention and flanked one of the boys, leaned on him and made googly eyes. After about 10 minutes their mom and I had to break up the love-feast and get a move on home. I did not hear a peep the entire ride home.

Can you believe it? Another beautiful day for dogs! Sunny and 26 - yeah.
The morning group went to Southland. Guinness and Nicky stuck together as brothers typically do. A couple of times people stopped to give me the eyeball of disapproval as they were "fighting" as only brothers can do - super noisy but nothing serious. Marty was thrilled to have Riley join us on a Thursday as Ryder is usually to crusty &/or mature to play with him. Riley (and I) were happy to have someone interesting enough for him to stick around with our group. Unfortunately for there is not a lot of really playful little guys on Thursday mornings. Riley (white) and Marty (black) looked like yin and yan as they raced up and down the paths and in and out of the long grass. All the dogs are enjoying the long grass but it is especially exciting for the short ones. Ziggy and Copper enjoyed the walk but were really feeling the heat by the end so we ran down to the river for a quick dip and drink. Of course they all bolted as soon as they were through the gate and by the time I got down there all but Ryder and Nicky were floating or lounging in the shallow water. Bella was such a good girl! She LOVES the little guys but they don't always love her and today she was able to control her affection and initiate play with the bigger dogs. Go Bella!
The afternoon group went to Southland as well. Today we welcomed a new little friend named Onyx. He is a 5 month old boxador (boxer/lab cross) and is jet black and super cute. He confidently got into the truck and into a crate for the ride to the park but was not as patient when it came time to get out. At the park he was like a ping pong ball shot from a cannon and it took about 10 minutes to get him settled and focused on the pack. After that he was content to stay with us. He and Taylor (another older but still little boxer) were BFF by the time the walk was over. Good thing Taylor was able to walk with us today. He also liked Wilbur and was wrestling with him. Wilbur is an older pup but Onyx was much larger.
Mitch and Wilbur found some dusty holes and rolled around in them and both were a nice shade of gross by the end of the walk.
CPC Cheetos was just exhausted (did you hear me EXHAUSTED) by the heat and the exertion of the walk and had to rest himself in the middle of the path while we were trying to get to the river. He would not budge and had to be carried across the bike path.
Owen was reluctant to leave the river as was Sam but both are such good dogs they brought up the rear of the group trudging back to the truck.
Go Bella!
